Audience Member Lambeti the great, once again as the usual Kakogiannis core of a predatory village that lurks in every corner just to attack the weaknesses of people (I mean, really; Kakogiannis has made me afraid of going to visit any Greek rural village, especially as a foreigner!) shines with her marvellous iconic performance. The tragic structure is once again present, but the classic films by this Greek master of drama still contain lessons in between that apply to any day and age. 99/100 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review walter m Even the simplest of decisions can have consequences for the future. Take for example, the one in "A Girl in Black" facing two tourists, Pavlos(Dimitris Horn), a writer, and Antonis(Notis Peryalis), an architect, when they arrive at an island from Athens of whether to stay at a hotel or at a local's house. They choose the latter to take in some local color. As they follow Marina(Ellie Lambeti), they learn that her family was once prosperous but her father getting killed during the Nazi occupation changed that for the worse. Soon after, Marina's mother(Eleni Zafeiriou) is chased through the streets after being caught in the embrace of Panagis(Stephanos Stratigos). This might also explain why Marina's brother Mitsos(Anestis Vlahos) is constantly getting into fights. "A Girl in Black" is an exquisitely photographed and gripping melodrama that explores the nature of freedom as shone through the prism of travel. As a tourist, one wants to get away and to enjoy oneself while at the same time knowing one must eventually return to one's drab life. As beautiful as the island may be, living there can very hard especially considering the people on the island are under constant watch from each other and cannot make a move without it being known instantly by everyone. At the center of this is the decaying house(a tip to "The Fall of the House of Usher") which is under a veritable state of siege. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member My first Greek movie.... very interesting, especially considerign it was shot with a single camera.... cant wait to go to Greece, it looks beautiful! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member ok, a bit dramatic, but that's Greeks for you Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this Cocoyannis movie. It's a touching exploration of a greek community. Cultural factors and double standards characterizes this tragic story. Happy ending? Probably! The influence of Italian neorealist tradition is clear, and Ellie Lambetti's performance is 'formidable'! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Cacoyannis defines Greek Cinema. A lovely combination of Italian neorealism and hollywood melodrama. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
