Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune This film undoubtedly was the creation of a marketing guy who thought Tom and Jerry might become more marketable if kids heard them talk and work together. Rated: 1/4 Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Joseph McBride Variety Though slickly animated, this first full-length pic featuring the vintage cat and mouse characters is misconceived from start to finish, full of gooey sentimentality and relegating Tom and Jerry to supporting characters in a banal melodramatic plot. Jul 6, 2010 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out A severely dull animated feature. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant This clumsy bomb is unlikely to launch these new friends on a series of further comic misadventures. Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Renee Schonfeld Common Sense Media Misfire offers talking characters, forgettable musical score. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/11/23 Full Review Dino G This movie brings lots of good lessons, good animation, a good musical score by Henry Mancini, good characters, and beautiful storytelling! P.S . This is my mom's opinion Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/01/23 Full Review Teddy B The greatest gift in life would be an actually competent 'Tom and Jerry' feature that doesn't feel like Little Orphan Annie's table scraps. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/29/23 Full Review Audience Member 30 years old and still one of my favorite childhood movies growing up Tom & Jerry make their debut on the silver screen! Both have been in cartoons since the 1940s and have gotten their love and popularity performing all kinds of slapstick with their hilarious rivalry The one thing they never did was speak So here the animators and director Phil Roman break the cardinal rule of actually having the infamous cat and mouse talk for the first time! Let's face it it's impossible to have these characters have any personality since they don't utter a single word So it does make a bit easier on younger viewers to see both their points of view Yes I know this was reviled by critics and even hardcore fans but it stuck with me on a certain level and Roman’s heart is in the right place since a movie was in development since the 1970s In this story Tom & Jerry are ready to move to a new home away from the city, unfortunately they get left behind by their owner So they are left on the streets hungry and alone That is until they run into a small girl named Robyn Starling who's running away from home Her evil Aunt Figg is after her wealthy father's fortune along with her attorney Mr. Lickboot and their dog, Ferdy Robin does all she can to get away and find her father who went missing in a climbing accident Tom & Jerry join her but have to escape the clutches of Figg and Lickboot The movie is filled with all the traditional slapstick animation, dozens of new songs by Henry Mancini, and some pretty choice voice actors including the late Charlotte Rae, the late Tony Jay, Dana Hill, Richard Kind, and Andi McAfee The music emulates the classic Hollywood musicals of 1950s My favorite number is actually Do I Miss You because it signifies how much Robyn misses her father willing to go the distance to be reunited with him Henry Mancini does compose a very good score too Okay not all the songs work and some side characters could be cut out since it is titled Tom & Jerry who have to put aside their differences Clearly this movie was made to catch up with the Disney renaissance since it was dominating that era So I don't hate this movie one bit, but I do understand how fans of the old show wouldn't sit right with it I suppose I'm just not a dedicated fan like most were back in the day This is very short, has good animation reminiscent of the old cartoon shorts, and will keep the younger viewers entertained giving a simple lesson on learning to work together; it's more beneficial than being confrontational If anything you can look at it as an alternate universe if you're not too much of a passionate fan of Tom & Jerry Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/23 Full Review Rami A Did someone actually believe that having Tom and Jerry talk will increase this product's appeal to kids?
