Nick F Tombstone is a fine Western, beautifully filmed and with a strong cast including Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot and Bill Paxton. But if anyone thinks it will be an authentic re-telling of the legendary Gunfight At The OK Corral, they will be sadly mistaken. While the opening storyline of Wyatt Earp, his brothers Virgil and Morgan, and friend Doc Holliday arriving in Tombstone, Arizona looking for a new start is fair enough, what follows often strays from the facts, particularly when it comes to the famous gunfight itself. Eyewitnesses to the 1881 gunfight said it lasted about 30 seconds – far too short for a movie version! Even so, the expanded account in this 1993 film is a gripping version with the cast on top form, and sure-handed directing from George P. Cosmatos. The attention to detail in every scene, from lighting, interiors, clothing and conversation is engrossing and adds much to the unfolding drama. Kurt Russell is a strong and stern Wyatt Earp, with dependable Sam Elliot as Virgil and stalwart Bill Paxton as Morgan. They make a forceful trio supported by an edgy Val Kilmer on top form as a moody and unpredictable Doc Holliday as they confront the Clanton and McLaury gang. Admittedly, there are a few too many lingering close-ups and rambling conversations and I think the film would be sharper with a hard-edit taking out 15 minutes or so. But overall, this is a very good, very watchable Western in the classic style. Reviewed by NICK FLETCHER.
