      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

A messy horror-comedy hybrid that makes poor use of a talented cast, Tone-Deaf aims for social commentary, but tumbles down the generation gap.

Mark B At times it almost works, almost funny, almost tense, and almost good, but it just does not get there. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Jeffrey P Psycho boomer with dead wife issues vs. hipster millennial with dead daddy issues. Takes some odd paths to get where it's going, and introduces quite a few side characters along the way without much purpose. There is a good movie to be had from this idea, this just isn't it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I know I saw this movie I musta forgot to rate it 🥺 so I’m just gonna say 2.9 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/15/21 Full Review Audience Member There's quite a few amusing gags in this killing spree for the hell of it movie. Some of it is clever and fun and some requires a stronger-then-normal suspension of disbelief. The meta gag is the "everybody gets a trophy" mind-set of the Millennials and the sour misplaced disappointment of the Boomers. I'm smack dab in the middle of the Baby Boomers but I was more sympathetic to the Millennial final girl in the movie. Amanda Crew is terrific as the put-upon lonely woman who only wants to get away from the city for a weekend, and she's not suspicious that a house that looks like it rents for $2,500 a night is available for $500 for the weekend. Robert Patrick is wonderful as the bitter old guy who feels taunted and threatened by the young (in garishly funny dreams). There are missteps, to be sure, but it's a fun watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review susan j Stumbled on the last 37 minutes of this flick, and it was funny, mildly scary, mildly suspenseful, and satirical--focusing on rural vs urban, social class, and Milenniels vs Baby Boomers. Heavy-handed and not brilliant amusing, but pretty original. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Watched this more or less by accident, with no expectations. Turned out to be very good, a lot of fun and with great performances. It might be missing one last punch at the end, but it's definitely worth a watch. Noel Murray Los Angeles Times This is a quirky, cutting story of generation versus generation, refereed by a filmmaker who seems to find both sides fairly ridiculous. Aug 24, 2019 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com A monotonous horror-comedy. Rated: 1/4 Aug 23, 2019 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com Tone-Deaf goes from 'interesting' to 'messy' too quickly for my tastes. Apr 22, 2019 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Continually ignores opportunities for logical explanations, defaulting on a blame game between boomers and millennials as a reason for a literal clash in a haunted mansion. Rated: 1/10 Dec 7, 2020 Full Review Ryan Larson Ghastly Grinning Ultimately, Tone-Deaf is brilliantly crafted, Crew and Patrick need to be applauded, Bates is at an all time high. It's sleek, smart, visceral, trippy and scary, Tone-Deaf has everything you could ask for.
