Brian K The documentary is more or less a homage to Tony Hawk -- i.e., essentially promotional material. His shortcomings and his generally not aging gracefully -- still trying to complete nearly impossible "tricks" to capture his youth -- seem to be dealt with, but only superficially. What is missing is that his wealth and celebrity stature allowed him to indulge himself in skateboarding and other ways, avoiding the elephant in the room -- his aging. Peter Pan by choice, which the film portrays his blind pursuits as mostly laudatory -- everybody likes a grown kid, until the consequences/irresponsibility/self-centeredness come to light. "Until the Wheels Falls" fails mostly in the respect, because Hawk remains a youth hero to the directorial/production team -- who I am guessing share some of Hawk's wanting to remain "young" forever, whatever the costs. He's stuck in his youth, and not in a good way -- arrested development -- but the film never actually really confronts this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review Alexander K Excellent documentary for all the skateboard fans and people who grew up skateboarding, these guys are fu..ing legends. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/11/23 Full Review Farah R This is the most extensive Tony Hawk documentary, featuring his childhood, rise to fame, and legacy as the best skateboarder in history. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/23 Full Review C H This was surprisingly melancholy and heartbreaking. I had expected some fun skater music and vintage footage and there was certainly that, thankfully, but here we get a look at someone skating hours every day because he doesn't know how to be in a family and you get several hearstopping accidents where his skating obsession almost kills him with his fellow skaters and bystanders pleading him to stop. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/05/23 Full Review Torin F More than just a biopic or celebration of skateboarding, Tony Hawk and friends' incredible stories provide a fascinating exploration of human persistence, resilience and obsession that is provocative and inspiring, especially when complemented by the wisdom of skateboarding sage Rodney Mullen. American striving and innovation are part of the story too, making this a saga about how we can all invent our lives. Noel Murray Los Angeles Times This lively and at times moving film explains, eloquently, why Hawk has endured in popular culture — and why he can’t stop risking his bones to master the maneuvers few can do. Apr 8, 2022 Full Review Nick Allen RogerEbert.com Jones film has a reverence for Hawk but does not let that turn his piece into hagiography. Rated: 3/4 Apr 7, 2022 Full Review Trace Sauveur Austin Chronicle He transforms from an amateur skater to a cultural icon and then to something even bigger: a man who can be proud of the ways he’s grown and matured for his family. Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Gena Radcliffe The Spool Until the Wheels Fall Off ultimately suggests that Hawk might only find fulfillment and inner peace when hes skateboarding, but if thats the case he isnt saying either way. Apr 24, 2022 Full Review Nicolás Delgadillo Knotfest Hawk is a legend, and while this documentary may be more invested in that rather than what makes him a human, its still a dazzling story worth telling. Apr 24, 2022 Full Review Wade Major FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's a documentary for people who are already immersed in this world... It's a very interesting psychological dissection.
