      Topper Takes a Trip

Reviews 63% Audience Score 500+ Ratings To gain entry to heaven, ghost Marion Kirby (Constance Bennett) has to do some good on earth. That means reuniting a divorcing couple, Cosmo (Roland Young) and Clara Topper (Billie Burke). To be fair, Marion played a part in their troubles: Clara mistakenly thought Marion was Cosmo's mistress. Making peace between the pair will mean accompanying Cosmo on a trip to the French Riviera and employing plenty of otherworldly tricks -- with the help of a canine spirit named Skippy. Audience Member A pretty disappointing film where a lot of the ghost shenanigans fall flat. Nearly everyone returns in this film except for Cary Grant whose omission is felt in this film. It starts off with Topper getting a divorce from his wife even though the last film ended up with them reconciling. Another aspect of this scene that was really lazy were the long flashbacks to the previous film. Mrs Kerby is back in the film with a dog this time and her character wants to save Topper's marriage. A lot of the invisible gags with her and Topper are very underwhelming. Mrs Kerby seems to push Topper everywhere, which just comes across as mean-spirited and unfunny. There is also a notable beach scene which goes on far too long and was not funny whatsoever. One gag that I thought was amusing was the fight between the Baron and Topper, but I think that was pretty much it. The actors try their best with what they're given but the direction and script let's them down. The special effects in the film are still impressive and deservedly won an Oscar. Overall, a pretty unfunny film with forced comedy but good acting and top-notch special effects. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Tom M Bennett, Young and Burke are all very good but without Cary Grant the sequel is missing most of the original's heart. Some very funny scenes and butler Mowbraw (who seems to be in every comedy in the 30's,) is great. Sorry Cary Grant didn't return for the sequels. After a while you feel sorry for Topper trying to explain away things he didn't do to cover for a spunky ghost. Poor guy couldn't win no matter what he did. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Cary Grant is sorely missed.
