A film made up of flashes of goodness interspersed with a whole lot of half-hearted mediocrity. Go to Full Review

DanTheMan 2 Oct 10 A lusty and delightful Gothic exercise, Torture Garden is an uneven but effective horror portmanteau that includes the likes of cannibal cats, haunted pianos, eternal Hollywood life and the reincarnation of Edgar Allan Poe. It has a similar cosy vibe that I would assign to most British horror films from around this period, which can simultaneously flirt with chills, thrills, and warm, inviting colour palettes. It's a balancing act that Hammer got down to a tee. Robert Bloch's playful script is sparked with truculent wit, while director Freddie Francis offers imaginative opportunities to indulge in stylish and gently prowling camerawork for maximum Gothic effect. The film gets steadily better as it progresses, eventually achieving a subtlety and wit that one does not expect from the cheerful bluster of the opening, where the ever-wonderful Burgess Meredith is our host, playing his tailor-made role with delicious relish. But the best performances are most certainly saved for the film's last tale. Jack Palance is devilishly delightful; over-the-top yet very menacing, while the always classy Peter Cushing provides a great contrast with a more subtle performance that is dignified and urbane. Topped by a somewhat effective score by the always reliable James Bernard, Torture Garden is a macabre, intelligently written sideshow packed with a good deal of suspense. While its flaws are plentiful, it's still a delightful little romp. See more Horror fan 4 12/01/2024 I absolutely enjoyed these four short horror stories. Burgess Meredith Jack palance and Peter Cushing were great!!! Tim Treakle See more 08/28/2019 Really fun Amicus horror anthology. Feels like it's right in line with those original Tales from the Crypt and Vault of Horror films. A lost cousin perhaps? I especially dug the Jack Palace/Peter Cushing segment. The old Hollywood one was pretty fun too. Our host is a devilishly fun Burgess Meredith, also featuring genre regulars Jack Palance, Peter Cushing, Barbara Ewing and Michael Ripper. Direction by Freddie Francis and stories written by Robert Bloch (Psycho) lend this a consistent tone of horror and irony. While not as great as their later effort Tales from the Crypt, it's still a very entertaining and atmospheric, early 70s English horror flick none the less.
