Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times Although more serious than he has ever been, Araki speaks his mind without being preachy and, what’s more, uses color and direct sound without losing the grit of his earliest pictures. Mar 18, 2024 Full Review Fernando F. Croce Slant Magazine Life is f***ed up, Araki is saying, but it is worth living. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 29, 2005 Full Review Steve Davis Austin Chronicle Although the teenaged ennui in the film sometimes comes off as hip nihilism, there's no question that the pain and turmoil depicted is anything but heartfelt. Rated: 4.5/5 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Scott Nye Battleship Pretension It’s a stark film about loneliness, isolation, and desperation for connection. Nov 21, 2024 Full Review D.M. Palmer Vague Visages Araki positions his movie as a twisted take on the “message film” of the 1950s... Nov 9, 2023 Full Review Mark Lukenbill Screen Slate Honest in its immediacy. Olive absolutely in love with gregg araki's cinematography and the visual aesthetic of his movies and characters, and i love the soundtracks of his movies as well, it's like the songs all came from my playlists. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review Thee S Very angsty, but fitting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/28/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't always need a movie to have a narrative to enjoy it but, despite this one's short runtime, this movie just felt like it went on forever and ever. It plays like a bunch of home video interviews someone shoots of themselves and their friends because they they think they're about a thousand times more interesting than they really are. Maybe the perspectives of these characters seemed somewhat novel in the early ‘90s but in 2020 they came across as immature adolescent cliches. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Emotive, angsty, dreamy, nostalgic, and moving - Araki's film is a haunting snapshot of a place in time, of the pain and anxiety of the queer reality in a harsh, intolerant world. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member ????James Duvall???? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Gregg Araki at his best.
