It's early in the Cold War, and no job is more important than Air Force test pilot. Maj. Lincoln Bond (William Holden) is an ace flier, but because he was a captive during the Korean War, Brig. Gen. Bill Banner (Lloyd Nolan) thinks the emotionally wounded Bond isn't ready for the job. Making matters worse for Bond, his ex-girlfriend, Connie (Virginia Leith), is spending her free time with Banner. But, in a series of dramatic events, Bond impresses fellow pilots and earthbound observers.

ashley h Toward the Unknown is an excellent film. It is about a group of Edwards Air Force Base experimental aircraft test pilots who push themselves to the limit. William Holden and James Garner give fantastic performances. The script is good but a little slow in places. Mervyn LeRoy did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and mystery. Toward the Unknown. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a new and exciting aviation technology for Hollywood to use as a fresh theme, although the production itself is fairly standard. It has less impact value now than I imagine it would have had at the time.
