Sara C I quite enjoyed the majority of this film, but it left me wanting something at the end, I guess because it's open-ended. On the other hand, it ends with hope. A one-hit wonder singer-songwriter works at an independent record store, having "given up" (his wife's accusation) on...his music? More that he's given up on life. One night he hears a young singer perform a beautifully soulful version of his song and complements her on her performance. She has her own problems, with her potential album being poorly received by the label as it's just another perfectly polished generic album. After giving her his "brutally honest" opinion, she visits him at the store and asks him to produce a new, better version of her album. He reluctantly agrees and what follows is a clash of unfeeling "perfection" vs imperfect but with heart. Sierra has skeletons in her closet and guilt about losing her brother but has packed it away. Damian has to learn how to feel anything again. But after clashes and eventual understandings, a beautiful album is made. Then it all seems to get rushed, the inevitable awkward kiss happens, they apologise, and part ways and start their own independent, healthier journeys. Now, I do like my endings wrapped up in a pretty bow, but this film just seemed to run out of story. I guess the open ending was necessary due to their stories continuing in their world and hope is always a good way to end it, but I think a little more of of this ending would have made it feel more complete. Unfortunately there are no subtitles, which does mean that I missed a bit of important dialogue too. There's nothing inherently wrong with this film, it's just that it's left me with a feeling of "is that it?" If you like music films, it's probably worth a watch as a lazy weekend afternoon time-filler. If you like Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
