troy k It still works, but the ending and the whole story just didn't come together enough to really like it. Rated 2.5/5 Stars •  Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review jesse o This is a perfectly standard thriller until its ridiculous final act, where everything is thrown into the shitter just for the sake of a couple of twists. I was actually somewhat enjoying this. I do not want to say it is a great thriller, or even a good one, but it does play out in a fairly interesting manner that has you invested in wanting to find out what's going on and if the villains will get their comeuppance somehow. The film probably simplifies the realities of organ smuggling, but I think the film also has some sad truths revealed by the big bad regarding the practice. In the sense that only the highest bidder can get what he or she may want. And that one or two missing people don't really matter in the long run as opposed to the money that can be made from taking their organs and selling them to the highest bidder. I think the simple story of this group of smugglers kidnapping this guy's wife to steal her organs is good enough. Then there's the reveal that the guy's wife, who's in a wheelchair, wasn't actually murdered for her organs to be harvested. I think that's a decent enough story. That's a good twist, you know why, because it makes sense within the context of the story. It might be somewhat convoluted, but I think it would work. Everything else that happened, with the reveal that it was all just an elaborate ruse, simply kills things past the point of no return. It was a twist for the sake of a twist, which is the worst possible reason to ever do a twist because it opens up the door to a lot of needless stupidity that had no reason to be in the movie in the first place. I hate this honestly, I really do. And it's not like this film is the worst example of it. What is the reason to do something that doesn't make sense in the context of the film? Or is so convoluted that you mentally check out of the film after that point? What's the reasoning? Do you wanna stay one step ahead of the audience? Is that really so important? Isn't it better to be predictable but end your story in a satisfying manner than it is to be unpredictable and people end up hating your film? Again this isn't the worst example of this, M. Night Shyamalan would own the list of worst twists in history, but I'm just sick and tired of this. And the film was perfectly fine up until that point. Makes me want to pull my hair out sometimes. I'd suggest for you to watch this film up until the first twist. If you absolutely must keep going, then watch until they get to the hospital in China. It's honestly all downhill from there. Average movie that is absolutely killed by a ridiculous twist. I wouldn't recommend it.
