John "Friendly" Fields (Ken Maynard) tangles with a stagecoach robber who ends up stealing Friendly's beloved hat. As Friendly travels, it seems that the bandit, wearing his hat, has preceded him, since everyone now quakes in Friendly's presence. With his newly found powers of intimidation, he rescues the cattle of a pretty rancher named Patience (Lona Andre) from the clutches of a rustler called Crocker (Roger Williams). Unfortunately, Crocker does not stay frightened for long.
