A surprisingly dull and uninspired affair. George Pavlou's direction only comes alive in the underground sequences and the script, plagued by producer interference, bears few traces of Clive Barker's penchant for sexy violence. Go to Full Review

See more 10/18/2014 Awful. Hard to believe Clive Barker had anything to do with this but he is credited as story and Co-screenwriter. See more 09/27/2013 Hired gun searches for a kidnapped girl held by an underground band of mutants--the unfortunate subjects of one doctor's mad experiments. Pretentious effort that provided further proof that Clive Barker's material is better written than screened, although it appears this film's shortcomings were not Barker's doing. See more 07/12/2013 A colony of underground dwellers are addicted to a drug that has the unfortunate side effect of disfigurement. The colony looks for a remedy in the form of a prostitute who is immune to the drug. Wes Craven wrote this disappointment and apparently did not like the big screen results so I guess rookie director George Pavlou must take the blame. Pavlou's attempts to be stylish fail and I can say this one never came close to drawing me in. Outside of a good title, this one has little to offer. See more 10/15/2009 Less than stellar Clive Barker film. The first film based on his works left a lot to be desired and he felt the same way since the finished product differed so much from his original script. Seems like a dry run for Night Breed. See more 09/01/2009 Written by Clive Barker and directed by George Pavlou (both of whom also collaborated on Rawhead Rex, which should have been a warning sign to me prior to watching this film), Transmutations, or Underworld as it is also known by, is the British horror film about a supposedly "beautiful" (I think she's butt ugly) prostitute named Nicole who is kidnapped by a group of mutants that dwell underground because of an addictive drug they've consumed. Nicole also consumes the drug but hasn't suffered from the disastrous side effects, which is why the mutants want her. In comes former bad guy Larry Lamb now turned straight who is in love with Nicole and hired back by bad guys to track her down, or so it seems. The clues lead to a shady doctor (Denholm Elliot, the butler from Trading Places) who is the creator of the drug. For a movie with a great 80's horror poster, not to mention one that was written by the likes of Clive Barker, I had expected so much more from this film, but was kinda let down. While this film does manage to tell a decent Barker-esque story, it comes off as a bit boring, especially with an overlong running time. The mutant effects are THAT mutant-like or awe-inspiring, and the action-packed climax was more of a fizzle. Overall, Transmutations isn't too terrible of a film, just painfully average.
