      Critics Consensus

Fast-paced savagery and a memorable twist aren't enough to make up for Trick's slavish devotion to superior slasher films of the past.

BigD J Mostly boring. A couple cool brutal scenes, but honestly I fell asleep halfway through out of boredom. The Tom Atkins appearance was cool, I guess, but his acting seemed contrived. The film was average length, but felt like it went on forever, pretty typical modern "horror" film with bad acting and a snooze fest plot. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/23 Full Review marcus j I liked this movie because it was kinda like scream which is my favorite horror franchise Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/23/23 Full Review Andy S (Mistletoe Virus I'm saying I love this movie!) Trick is one of the best I've seen in quite a while, I will highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Halloween/slashers/horror movies Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/12/23 Full Review emilliano s Scream wannabe. Adding Jamie Kennedy in the cast was'nt enough to have a scream vibe. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Tara C SPOILER FREE So, here's the thing. I've seen a LOT of horror movies, many of them slasher films. One of my favorite horror films is Scream - which is why I was so excited to see Jamie Kennedy in this film. Unfortunately, this movie did not live up to my expectations for it. At all. I found myself rolling my eyes very, very often throughout. I predicted literally everything that happened, including the "big reveal" at the end. And yes, it was meant to be a "big reveal" because of how the shot was framed, how the music grew, and other tricks of cinematography that are meant to reveal things that the audience was not supposed to know and should now be shocked to see. I was not shocked, at all. I knew exactly what was going to happen and I already knew the climax of the film as well. It was predictable. If y'all are interested to know why I feel the way I do, I have a breakdown below that goes into more detail. Overall Plot: 5/10 I love horror movies that are based on the holiday of Halloween. The OG movie being, of course, Halloween by John Carpenter. That was why I was excited for this film, because Halloween is my second favorite holiday. I was expecting something like "Halloween" or "Trick 'r Treat" or similar to the first season of "Slasher." Unfortunately, although the movie began really well, it quickly devolved into unoriginal drivel. As I said above, everything was extremely predictable. There were a few good kill sequences, I'll give them that - things you would expect from a slasher horror, which is what this movie definitely is. But nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. Plot Creativity: 3/10 There was almost no creativity in this plot. It pulled from "Halloween," "Trick ‘r Treat," and the "Slasher" TV series as well as "I Know What You Did Last Summer" but not in a creative or unique way. It was more like trying to copy from good films (IKWYDLS excluded as I am not a fan of that film) and take the best parts of them in hopes that it could become a new cult favorite. Now, this could be acceptable when done in a horror/comedy genre, but there was no comedy in this movie. It was clearly meant to be taken seriously. But, as stated multiple times above, everything in this plot was highly predictable. Every "big reveal" was heavily, heavily foreshadowed in earlier parts of the movie and I'm not sure how you wouldn't see them coming because of that. I wanted to like it, I really did. The beginning did start off well and I found it interesting, but it went downhill so fast - not even 15-20 minutes in. Acting: 6/10 The acting in this movie, overall, was not bad at all. Omar Epps and Ellen Adair were the two main stars of the film. They did a great job and were extremely believable. Some of the other actors were…okay. They weren't great, but not terrible. Some of the side characters who only had a couple of lines were…less than okay. Again, this is not a "B" movie - the acting was fine. But was anything outstanding? No. Character Likeability: 4/10 I kind of liked Detective Mike Denver and Sherrif Lisa Jayne to the point where I didn't really want them to die but wasn't overly concerned if they did. But I honestly didn't really care about any of the characters. I don't blame the actors for this because, as I said above, the actors did a fairly good job. I blame the screenwriters. They didn't focus on the people in their film. I didn't know anything about Detective Denver - at all - and he was the main character of the movie. How can anyone care about characters if you don't introduce them properly? If you don't give them a background or a story that I care about? A sick wife, a dead child, even struggling with alcoholism or…I don't know…something. To make likable characters, you need the audience to be able to connect with them. There was very little connection in this film. I literally did not care who lived or died in this movie, and that is really not good. Dialogue: 5/10 The dialogue was average. It was, as was the rest of this film, very predictable. There was the occasional funny line or zinger, but for the most part, I just found myself rolling my eyes constantly. None of the dialogue really made me care about the characters or enhance the plot. Still, I've seen worse. I've watched MST3K and Rifftrax after all. Now those movies are bad… Ending Satisfaction: 5/10 I can't say I was satisfied or dissatisfied with the ending because I knew what was coming. They foreshadowed the daylights out of it and, I know I sound like a broken record here, but it was predictable (as I'm starting to be now, aren't I? Not fun is it?). I guess the ending was fine. It was a battle of good vs. evil (as most horror films are) and it ended how most horror movies do these days. Pretty ambiguously. Overall Enjoyability: 5/10 This film was fine for what it was - an unoriginal slasher horror. If you love slasher films and you are bored, watch it. If you're looking for creativity and actual scares, I don't recommend it. I wasn't scared at all in this film, even when "jump scares" occurred because I already knew when they were coming. This movie was - can you say it with me now? - predictable. Not bad. Not good. Just…fine. Anton Bitel Sight & Sound leave[s] us, much like the characters in the film who attend the all-night horror-thon, worrying about just who might be sitting around us in the theatre - because, as Jayne puts it, "any one of your costumed moviegoers could be your killer". Nov 6, 2019 Full Review Rex Reed Observer A it's a cheesy, actionable rip-off of the John Carpenter Halloween franchise with plenty of blood and jack o'lanterns, but without a shred of originality. Rated: 0/4 Oct 21, 2019 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times One whopper of a plot-twist briefly gives "Trick" an original hook. But by the end of the picture it's clear the filmmakers aren't really interested in exploring any of the potentially interesting sociopolitical implications of their big surprise. Oct 18, 2019 Full Review Kiko Vega Espinof Fun without pretension and full of humor. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 May 17, 2021 Full Review Ryan Larson Ghastly Grinning Trick is savage, brutal and twisted in all the best ways. It's a razor sharp, slick as hell return to form for Lussier and an absolute must see for any fan of the slasher genre. Jun 24, 2020 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed Trick is a fun Halloween film for fans of slasher films may they be hardcore or casual; it's gleefully violent and doesn't make apologies for it.
