What to Know

Critics Consensus

Troll doesn't rewrite the monster movie rulebooks -- but with mythology this rich and action this exciting, it doesn't have to.

Audience Says

Troll's decent visual effects aren't enough of a reason to sit through its predictable story, cheesy dialogue, and uneven acting.

Noel Murray Los Angeles Times “Troll” succeeds by getting back to basics. Like way, way back — all the way to the Old Norse. Dec 16, 2022 Full Review Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting While light on narrative, it’s when director Roar Uthaug embraces the film's monster that Troll reveals its magic. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 1, 2022 Full Review Joshua Polanski Boston Hassle Troll plays its premise too seriously to be any fun and it lacks any socio-critical muster to be an effective disaster film. Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers “Troll” is as much fun as any of the recent films in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse. Oct 26, 2023 Full Review Aaron Phillips But Why Tho? A Geek Community With a perfect run time, some superb visuals, and a throughline of some brilliant mythology, Troll deserves to be watched. Rated: 7.5/10 Jan 4, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies That often dismissed and maligned word “fun” defines “Troll” in a nutshell. It’s an eye-popping genre flick that delivers exactly what you expect from it. Nothing more; nothing less. Rated: 4/5 Dec 29, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Overall, the movie was overrated if you ask me. What's with the hype?!? I thought they gave a good decent explanation of why troll was alone. I just feel that the ending was absolutely terrible. If you haven't seen the movie I'd recommend others before seeing this. Don't get dragged by the hype as I did. Without spoiling anything, I think there's so much to improve on this movie that could have made it great. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/02/25 Full Review James W Absolute cinema I don’t know why everyone is hating on this film this movie was so good Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Sheree B Two stars for the superb visual effects. The troll looks exactly like should. However, terrified of anything different, humans are brilliant at going straight to 'annihilation', rather than curiosity, respect and altruism. The ending is so completely, disappointingly typical of human pride in conquest that I finished the movie feeling sick to my stomach. 'Who should we name our magnificent conquest after? Tobias boulder'. Oh please! Plot holes: looking for any signs of bio material in the trolls footprint, despite knowing from the outset it's made of rock. Then suddenly seeing inside the trolls mouth as it eats a Christian soldier to find it has a fleshy tongue, and later that trolls have skeletons made of DNA structure similar to humans. Nora is told as a child that you can only see mythological creatures with belief in your heart... yet everyone in the world can see this one. The troll is depicted as being incredibly intelligent and purposefully saves a child, yet not a single person seems to have the brain capacity to think that perhaps the troll doesn't want to harm anyone and needs help. Even at the end of the movie, when Nora FINALLY decides it might be morally wrong to kill, she still feels accomplished when it dies. Everyone is high fiving eachother and laughing. If this isn't a great depiction of human psychology leaning towards the malicious, what is? And the only human who wanted to try kindness first is the 'crazy one' in the movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Kyle M Thrillingly executed and derivatively inspired with its own geographically aligned mythology as its main successful, unique draw with a rather concise story. (B) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/21/25 Full Review Leo P For some reason my old review was removed but I will restate I found the treatment of the troll horrendous. The guy was genuinely just waking up from a massive nap and they torture him from the get go, throwing his child’s skull at him partway through the movie. I found this to be a harrowing description of the human condition. It’s not like there’s any serious reason they couldn’t get down w the troll and show a little respect. I know it is just a movie and this is a silly review but this bothered me a bit. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review A D The visuals are good, and the acting is fine, but the plot is forced and predictable (and without spoilers, I didn't like the ending). Had some fun watching it, but rarely for the reasons I think the movie intended. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
