What to Know

Critics Consensus

Troll doesn't rewrite the monster movie rulebooks -- but with mythology this rich and action this exciting, it doesn't have to.

Audience Says

Troll's decent visual effects aren't enough of a reason to sit through its predictable story, cheesy dialogue, and uneven acting.

“Troll” succeeds by getting back to basics. Like way, way back — all the way to the Old Norse. Go to Full Review

While light on narrative, it’s when director Roar Uthaug embraces the film's monster that Troll reveals its magic. Go to Full Review

Troll plays its premise too seriously to be any fun and it lacks any socio-critical muster to be an effective disaster film. Go to Full Review

That often dismissed and maligned word “fun” defines “Troll” in a nutshell. It’s an eye-popping genre flick that delivers exactly what you expect from it. Nothing more; nothing less. Go to Full Review

Charles H. @ch0415 1d I thought it was great. I actually think I found this on Rotten Tomatoes originally. It was a lot of fun, quite surprising too. I’m just about to start troll too. I’m not sure. Fingers crossed. See more tm11999 M 1d great norse old world story about their mythology. the trolls are awesome and the girl is quite fetching, watch this. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 2d Troll on Netflix was a major disappointment. From the very beginning, the film struggled to deliver a believable or engaging story, and the CGI was immediately noticeable for all the wrong reasons. Watching the sequel only reinforced the feeling that the franchise as a whole lacks direction and cohesion. The director seems completely lost in executing the film. The choices made throughout the story suggest a lack of understanding of the material or the tone the movie was trying to achieve. Instead of creating a cohesive narrative, the film meanders through poorly connected scenes that fail to build suspense or investment. The screenplay is equally problematic. The story is messy and unfocused, leaving viewers with a film that jumps from idea to idea without proper development. Characters are underwritten, motivations are unclear, and the narrative structure lacks any sense of rhythm or payoff. The performances do little to salvage the experience. The actors and actresses often appear miscast and disconnected from their roles. At times, it feels as if they are simply going through the motions without any real engagement with the story, which makes it difficult for the audience to care about their fates. Even in terms of spectacle, the film fails to impress. The CGI is inconsistent and poorly executed, which undermines any potential for immersion. The visual effects, combined with the weak narrative, make the film feel more like a low-quality TV special than a feature film intended for theatrical or streaming audiences. Overall, Troll is an odd, uneven, and ultimately frustrating viewing experience. It tries to be more than it is capable of, resulting in a film that lacks credibility, cohesion, and entertainment value. I cannot recommend it, and it is unlikely to warrant a second viewing. See more John A 3d The translation to English is not perfect/ There’s laughter after lines that really are not funny in any way (for example, Nora Tideman the anthropologist being being introduced to Captain Kristoffer). The seemingly invincible monster that they have (almost, sort of, but not really) discovered after 20 minutes into the show has left a single foot impression and yet it’s not a one legged monster. And to add to emerging confusion, we have no idea why the protagonist’s father (Tobias) is greeting her and Adreas with anger and a shotgun. I’m at a loss as to why they chose to portray this man as a borderline psychopath, at least initially. Perhaps that’s the kind of personality that’s necessary for meeting and soothing the monster troll. Whatever, the kind overtures which Tobias makes towards the monster did not prevent him from getting violently whacked by the same. Exit the nasty Tobias who was the only one who seemed to have some knowledge and sympathy for the beast. There is an exciting scene where the troll shows up at a Norwegian theme park full of parents and children. By this time, the authorities have figured out a troll "antidote" which has its basis in childrens' books. The other unexpected surprise is the warmheartedness of the troll when it comes to saving a child’s life from a falling helicopter. After much discussion of various plans that might neutralize the troll, they decide upon one which will have the least collateral damage. However, the electrical systems required to plan and launch an offensive fail. And it’s not entirely clear why. The troll rages through Oslo – Godzilla style – narrowly missing Nora in her Chevrolet half-ton when they use a large skull as a decoy to lure the beast to a rendevous with the military outside of populated Oslo. Whoops – the skull has some sentimental value to the beast and it’s not impressed when it topples off the Chevrolet. Now furious, the troll lashes out at Nora’s truck, ripping up bridges and streets in pursuit. A woman in the control centre where the troll defense is being coordinated has done something wrong, but it’s not clear to the viewer why she’s attracted her boss’s anger. Meanwhile, Nora looses her truck to the angered beast and narrowly avoids being stepped on. It takes far too long for the military response to be coordinated despite all the time they’ve had to plan and deploy a solution. The aeronautic tactic is cancelled at the last minute out of concerns for collateral damage and Nora’s announcement that a less lethal solution exists (like trying to shoo it back to it’s underground origin). By this time viewers will feel like the show is being dragged out over the last fifteen minutes. The movie ends with a familiar childhood happy ending, that is, all monsters are afraid of the light (which is why they hide under your bed). There’s laughs and smiles as they look over the rocky corpse at dawn and think about what name they’ll assign to it. Despite a few other shortcomings in the plot, when they actually find the long tailed troll, some visual impressions are quite engaging.
