What to Know

Critics Consensus

Girded by strong performances from Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, and lifted by some of the Coens' most finely tuned, unaffected work, True Grit is a worthy companion to the Charles Portis book.

Katherine Don Bitch Media I thought the film was excellent... [But] Don't skimp on the development of female characters just because the complexities are difficult to represent. We're going to notice. Jan 8, 2021 Full Review Ben Walters Sight & Sound Henry Hathaway's 1969 adaptation was highly faithful... The Coens' movie is less faithful than Hathaway's but stronger - the production, by their regular team, is formally superb - and weirder. Jul 10, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Disappointing overall, though entertaining at times, True Grit isn't exactly the Coen brothers best movie but they get an A for effort. Rated: C+ Sep 8, 2017 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine Intelligently, the Coens infiltrate their bloody discourse beneath the plot, as in the best classic cinema, where a great theme rides along a great story. Alec B It surpasses the first film adaptation in just about every way imaginable but most notable is in its language and that Mattie Ross is ultimately enduring here rather than being the most annoying character imaginable. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Tom F The Coen Brothers work their magic on this brutal tale of the West, recovering it from the grip of John Wayne. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Fer S Great movie! Amazing performance by Jeff Bridges. Very engaging story and shot in a very pleasing way. I would have liked a darker tone though! specially during the climax. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Paulo M Western for kids... Bridges could had been great with such performance in a different, more truth to reality, western movie. Not a bad movie, but, since the beginning, you sense the ending of it and how unreal is going to be. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Joseph R Movie is a Kabuki show trying to replace a classic Western. No literary sensibility, stiff screenwriting. Shifting focus to Mattie Ross bad idea, the kick of the original was Cogburn all the way. This version diminishes the Cogburn character to almost a shiftless drunk, and elevates Mattie to heroic indomitable revengeful angel. At age 14 she even can interpret an obscure latin phrase.that would stump a lot of classics professors. As for Cogburn, he loses his gritty charisma, ala John Wayne, and becomes a derelict slouch who nevertheless can shoot targets in the air with a six gun like Annie Oakley with a telescopic rifle. The movie is a weak watery overlay to a great movie and all in all a very bad idea. Also the ending depicting Mattie later in life as an officious one-armed spinster -- terrible idea, totally anticlimactic, staged-seeming. Compare it with the fence-jumping heroic hoopla of the John Wayne ending. This version may be closer to the novel but it is much further from what the original was, a classic characterization of a unique Western type of crusty, half-drunk superhero per John Wayne. I like you "Dude" but hey you are no John Wayne. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Michael J Great writing, great acting, all around solid Western. Really enjoyed Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld in this. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
