What to Know

Critics Consensus

Girded by strong performances from Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, and lifted by some of the Coens' most finely tuned, unaffected work, True Grit is a worthy companion to the Charles Portis book.

Katherine Don Bitch Media I thought the film was excellent... [But] Don't skimp on the development of female characters just because the complexities are difficult to represent. We're going to notice. Jan 8, 2021 Full Review Ben Walters Sight & Sound Henry Hathaway's 1969 adaptation was highly faithful... The Coens' movie is less faithful than Hathaway's but stronger - the production, by their regular team, is formally superb - and weirder. Jul 10, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Disappointing overall, though entertaining at times, True Grit isn't exactly the Coen brothers best movie but they get an A for effort. Rated: C+ Sep 8, 2017 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine Intelligently, the Coens infiltrate their bloody discourse beneath the plot, as in the best classic cinema, where a great theme rides along a great story. thiago s Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/25 Full Review Stephen C A successful Western movie in 1 hour and 50 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated PG-13 for Intense Sequences of Western Violence and Disturbing Images!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The official remake of the John Wayne classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/09/25 Full Review Kevin P A gripping and very engaging remake of the John Wayne classic. Both versions of True Grit have their strengths, but this one is more nuanced with its story and grittier like the title implies. Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon are both great as the leading men. Rooster Cogburn is a truly unpredictable wildcard that shows emotional depth, but isn't afraid to be an opportunist. He's equally badass as he is pathetic as he clearly has been through a lot. La Boeuf is a great contrast with his by the book approach and insecure need for respect. But a young Hailee Steinfeld easily steaks the show with her amazing role as Mattie. Easily one of the best child performances I've ever seen. She has so much conviction and intensity that carries entire scenes but still feels believable and emotionally investing with her obsession with bringing her father's pathetic killer to justice. Which all ties into the movie's bittersweet ending about how vengeance at such a young age can consume you and skew your priorities so far that the rest of your life can feel hollow, bitter, untrustworthy, and lonely with your own unique set of battle scars. It's not as charismatic or uplifting as the original, but it's far more introspective and fascinating with its character studies. Topped off by some fantastic cinematography with great lighting and a sweeping epic soundtrack. Definitely one of the best remakes out there that arguably supersedes the original. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/02/25 Full Review Critic S Better than the John Wayne 1969 film version of the book, but, like the original, I still dislike the ending; the snake bite ruins what would have been a great ending. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Sebastian L There are great moments and great characters sprinkled all over True Grit and the cinematography is beautiful, but for some reason it never really takes off. Maybe it's because the plot is a bit too random or because you're not invested enough in Mattie's story. Nevertheless it is worth your time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Read all reviews
