Critics Consensus

Truth's terrific cast and compelling message are often enough to overcome its occasionally didactic and facile dramatization of a nuanced real-life tale.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Is it a great film? No, but it definitely deserves to be talked about. Rated: B Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Kristen Yoonsoo Kim Complex Truth is all about Blanchett, who really shines in-and carries-an otherwise bad good movie. (Or is it a good bad movie?) There are a lot of themes introduced, but are stated in rather sweeping gestures. Rated: 2.5/5 Feb 27, 2017 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com Truth, as much as I agree with many of its contentions, fails to hold itself to the same level of scrutiny as it does those going after Mapes and Rather, and as such never feels as authentic as it should have. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 22, 2016 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine This is a disappointment: not terrible by any means, but difficult to defend as any serious measure as good. Rated: 5/10 Jun 19, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review A film that will incite conversation about the state of journalism today. Rated: 3/4 Apr 25, 2022 Full Review Olly Richards NME (New Musical Express) Cate Blanchett gives a career-best performance as a journalist torn apart by a vital mistake... Audience Member Way better than Spotlight. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/07/24 Full Review Rick M In spite of its gut wrenching and the intense frustration it gave me, I love this film for what it does for the TRUTH, though in the end the truth was stifled by the apparatus of political power. And that is the greatest and ultimate truth that it brings to light: that no one cares about the truth any more, and because of it's near total suppression and all the misinformation and disinformation that is forced upon us by the powers that be, true journalism no longer exists. It makes me ashamed of what America has become. And it portends the demise and collapse of civilization. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Ken J How does this movie only get 62%? It is great! Look at who all is acting in it, and they nailed it. The screenwriting was good, catching the significance of the moment and how 60 Minutes has never been the same since. So many parallels with the way "Truth" is used and abused in news these days. The stories on all news are picked often to distract you from what you need to be learning about just like Karl Rove and friends got us to focus on the memos instead of the privileges of Bush family and W never really showing up for duty in the National Guard, and "leaving" early. Your attention is held, you feel the emotion of Mary Mapes and others, and learn what has become important in corporate media/news. Relevant to today for sure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Georgan G Blanchett did powerful acting here. The plot was somewhat hard to follow but I remember when it happened. "Truth" is aptly named as that is what is reported. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Great acting by great actors. Compelling true story Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Jeff B It's no All the President's Men, but it's an interesting story, which will probably leave you with little faith in the integrity of modern news agencies.
