Truth is all about Blanchett, who really shines in-and carries-an otherwise bad good movie. (Or is it a good bad movie?) There are a lot of themes introduced, but are stated in rather sweeping gestures.

Truth, as much as I agree with many of its contentions, fails to hold itself to the same level of scrutiny as it does those going after Mapes and Rather, and as such never feels as authentic as it should have.

If you enjoy watching history get steamrolled by self-righteous melodrama, Truth is your movie. It takes CBS’s disastrous Bush National Guard story—built on laughably shaky documents—and spins it into a martyrdom saga for "brave journalists." The film doesn’t just ignore the scandal’s core failure (basic fact-checking); it treats accountability like a villain and rewrites a cautionary tale into a redemption fantasy. Blanchett and Redford shine, but their talent is wasted on a script that launders reputations instead of confronting reality. For a film called Truth, it sure works overtime to avoid it.

The film is about the demise of Dan Rather and his 60 minutes producer, after they tackled then-President George W. Bush's Texas National Guard record during the Vietnam era. Starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, it's a fascinating watch IF you're at least 40 years old. (Younger than that and you likely won't care.)

In spite of its gut wrenching and the intense frustration it gave me, I love this film for what it does for the TRUTH, though in the end the truth was stifled by the apparatus of political power. And that is the greatest and ultimate truth that it brings to light: that no one cares about the truth any more, and because of it's near total suppression and all the misinformation and disinformation that is forced upon us by the powers that be, true journalism no longer exists. It makes me ashamed of what America has become. And it portends the demise and collapse of civilization.
