Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review The central character is invested with a tragic comic pathos that had a Shakespearian edge... May 22, 2019 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The grainy intimacy of the photography compliments the abrasive stubble rub of these prickly, sometimes difficult characters. Rated: 3/5 May 19, 2019 Full Review Cath Clarke Guardian [A] touching, unexpectedly funny end-of-life drama set in Brighton, with a terrific performance by 83-year-old Derren Nesbitt. Rated: 3/5 May 16, 2019 Full Review Ben Turner The Pink Lens A character piece that puts generations alongside each other, this is a beautiful movie about finding the truth that unites us. Rated: 4/5 Sep 1, 2021 Full Review Charlotte Harrison Charlotte Sometimes Goes to the Movies Just a lovely, quietly pulls-at-your-heart-strings-and-tear-ducts watch. Oct 13, 2020 Full Review Tom Beasley VultureHound Tucked is at its best when it focuses on its comedy, which is often impregnated with heart far more than the dramatic scenes. PridePosterStudios Derren Nesbitt and leopard print. A match made in heaven. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Angelo P The strange friendship between an elderly drag queen and a gender-fluid who seeks her place in the entertainment world, played by Jordan Stephens, a magnetic character, with the stage name of "Faith", Tucked film has in common with the his older protagonist, the rudeness, his role is certainly not light, indeed in many scenes he is abrasive. But he has a huge heart, and raw charm. The deliberately grainy photography matches the sparks between the prickly, sometimes difficult, two. What to add ... I wanted to be there, with them. Beautiful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Rotten doesn't even begin to describe what Amazon suggested! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member heartwarming lovable characters. i laughed and shed some tears. totally enjoyed it, Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member I found the performances to be down to earth, and they came across as natural, in this drama about gender identity and mortality. The tenderness and humour are major assets in this small examining of a friendship between two queens. Its those elements that make you love the characters, and care about Jackie's story Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a terrible film. I don't know where to start. I'm a gay British man. This film feels like it's been written by a straight person who knows nothing about the gay scene. The vast majority of drag in the U.K is a gay man on stage, the audience is packed full of gay men standing up holding drinks. Most of the act is comedy, which means taking the piss out of the audience. There is a small amount of lip synching, but in the U.K. (in comparison to the US) this is not important. The setup in the movie, in the bar, doesn't really exist in the U.K. We don't have drag done in a kind of cabaret setting with people sitting at tables, with no people standing( I'm talking pre COVID here). We don't tip drag queens or any one in a pub for that matter. A straight man doing drag, where to start, there is a long history of why the drag scene developed within the gay scene, and most of that is due to seeking refuge from homophobia and from homosexuality being illegal. In some ways it developed as a form of escapism and a form of rebellion towards the dominant straight culture and oppression of gays, it also gave employment to gays who were to effeminate or to damaged(due to homophobia) to make it in a homophobic world where being gay itself was illegal up until relatively recently. I could say more, but there is too much. But can you see why having a straight man doing drag in a gay space, would be annoying to gays? Can you imagine a straight man playing a drag king in a lesbian space? This bar is supposed to be gay, as he keeps asking the audience if they are gay, yet most of the audience is straight couples and women? Why are you americanising British films by using terms like ‘high school sweet heart', which terminology we don't use? Also why does the plot make no sense?
