In post-colonial Senegal in the 1960s, teenagers in a small village form two small rival cliques: Les Ins, who prefer French pop singers, and The Kings, who favor American music. The mischievous Baac (Ismael Thiam), an orphan raised collectively by the village, plays the gangs against each other when they fight over girls and a record player. With Western culture being an obvious influence on the lives of the youths, the village contemplates how its customs and habits are changing every day.

Audience Member The youth of the seaside town of Poponguine’s main concerns are that of throwing a party, outdoing the rival gang, and idolizing American singers. When the effects of French colonialism, present in the lone white teacher, are overshadowed by the importance of getting a record player for the surprise party, we are greeted with a portrait of the youth. The elders, on the other hand, reserve their criticism for that of disobedience, changing times, and outside influence on culture. This Senegalese portrait, enhanced by realist techniques, untrained actors, American pop culture references and universal youth rebellion makes it accessible to a broader audience.
