Audience Member The youth of the seaside town of Poponguine’s main concerns are that of throwing a party, outdoing the rival gang, and idolizing American singers. When the effects of French colonialism, present in the lone white teacher, are overshadowed by the importance of getting a record player for the surprise party, we are greeted with a portrait of the youth. The elders, on the other hand, reserve their criticism for that of disobedience, changing times, and outside influence on culture. This Senegalese portrait, enhanced by realist techniques, untrained actors, American pop culture references and universal youth rebellion makes it accessible to a broader audience.
