David Mermelstein Wall Street Journal It opens, and closes, in a Mexican monastery, a startling example of gothic Expressionism right out of the F.W. Murnau or Robert Wiene playbook. But in between lies a classic melodrama. Oct 1, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member The eternal theme is the love triangle, and although the film is very similar to a theatrical production, it is shot well. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Though it may be a melodramatic love plot, it is told with such startling music, visuals, and camerawork that it leaves one to get roiled up with similar emotions as the characters and those summoned emotions are then washed away with a wave of goosebumps by the film's symbolic bookend. The decision to tell this tale under two truths was both a wise and innovative one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Dos monjes is noteworthy beyond its crooked atmosphere and oneiric black and white cinematography. Narratively, the film commits to the very unique decision of telling its core flashback story in full twice, once from the perspective of each of the two male protagonists (Juan and Javier, played by Víctor Urruchúa and Carlos Villatoro). They are each, of course, the hero of their own version, though neither is without truths in his perspective. Indeed, as it's pointed out at every option, before there was Kurosawa's Rashomon, there was the enigmatic and alluring Dos monjes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
