Critics Consensus

Despite the best efforts of Butler and Heigl, The Ugly Truth suffers from a weak script that relies on romantic comedy formula, with little charm or comedic payoff.

Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Heigl is said to have fallen out with Apatow since the making of Knocked Up. Maybe she should reconnect with him. Rated: 1/5 Aug 11, 2009 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Everything about it was obviously handed down from another source, and even while realizing that, you’ll probably find the result very watchable, if forgettable. Rated: 1.5/4 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...everything that could snarl up happens here; unsympathetic leads, silly scenarios, a wealth of sexual crudity and a debatable truth about men and women that ends up feeling rather...ugly... Mark B It really is just a bad Hallmark movie that is covered in R rated language. Not at all original and not very funny. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Timothy E Gerard Butler is outstanding. I laughed so hard with this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Sreemoyee D great easy on the eyes kinda movie. loved it! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review Zach L Oldie goodie and funny with two characters being so opposite but also so much fit for the other ! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/23 Full Review Audience Member I was on a cheesy romcom marathon and I remembered my parents watching this movie when I was a kid, so I thought I'd give it a try. Jesus Christ I wish I didn't because I can't remember the last time I got so angry over a movie. Stopped watching about halfway through. This movie isn't funny. Like at all. And it's barely romantic either, so the title of romcom barely fits. The plot relies on the boring, overdone formula of good girl/bad guy, but it doesn't even do that well. It's ‘comedy' is lazy, relying solely on misogyny and the sexualisation/objectification of women as a crutch for its poorly written jokes. The characters are all so 2 dimensional and forgettable that I don't even remember most of their names. The love interest played by Gerard Butler has literally no redeemable qualities. He's just an asshole that gets the girl simply because the plot requires it. And for some reason we're supposed to root for him over the sweet neighbour who has done practically nothing wrong??? No real woman would EVER choose someone like him, and it's so clear that this movie was written by misogynistic men to appeal to the fantasies of other misogynistic men. Overall just a sad sad attempt at a movie, with boring old jokes that just don't hold up in the current day. But what was I expecting from a movie released in 2009?? Ik this review will mean absolutely nothing to a movie released 13 years ago but I had to vent somewhere.
