      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Despite Sandra Oh's typically strong performance and glimmers of potential from writer-director Iris K. Shim, Umma is a cliché-ridden missed opportunity.

Lue just bad. not scary. just bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/22 Full Review Janice W The movie wasn't too scary given its supposed to be a horror/suspense thriller. Sandra Oh was great and I liked how she explained some of the Korean traditions. At least the movie had a conclusion unlike other movies that left me scratching my head. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/07/22 Full Review Brandon O More of a suspense than a horror. Story is a decent watch and the performances are great. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/22 Full Review Bradley Sandra Oh! She is the best, and I also watch anything with which Sam Raimi has any involvement. And Beekeeping! Fantastic film. Will definitely buy on disc. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/22 Full Review jana k it was a nice setting. daughter was pretty. oriental horror movie, different. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/22 Full Review sammi9399 Man that was creepy, I watch horror movies all the time and they genuinely scare and make me a bit paranoid shortly after I watch them but this was on another level. I haven’t watched a good horror movie with a great story line in a long time. Most of the new ones seem to just be generic, more of the same but this was amazing. 10 out of 10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Maxwell Rabb Chicago Reader Umma’s curse is an imperfect blend of talent that may shine occasionally but mostly trips over itself. Mar 28, 2022 Full Review Jenny Nulf Austin Chronicle There are so many interesting components of Umma that never click, wasting a completely original idea on banality. Mar 24, 2022 Full Review Martin Tsai AV Club Many of Shim’s choices end up offering a decidedly uncomplimentary depiction of the nexus of Asian and Asian-American culture. Rated: C Mar 19, 2022 Full Review Hector A. Gonzalez Loud and Clear Reviews Umma is a tale of past generational trauma that is unfortunately bogged down by half-baked set pieces and horror clichés. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 24, 2024 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It Though it has an intriguing premise, Umma leaves little to be desired, with a lukewarm script and ineffective jump scares. Oct 20, 2022 Full Review Michael Nordine Film Occasionally While it’s hardly an exemplar of the genre, one hopes its lukewarm reception doesn’t prevent similar projects from being made in the future.
