Namrata Joshi Outlook The extremely slow pace is severely sleep-inducing, the most dramatic of scenes come across as rather inert and the long takes don't hold the audience interest. Rated: 2/4 Jan 17, 2019 Full Review Derek Elley Variety Demands more patience than usual mainstream Hindi fare but rewards the viewer with fine perfs and a story that engages emotionally over the three-hour span. Dec 1, 2006 Full Review Ethan Alter Film Journal International This story has all the hallmarks of a grand tragedy, but under J.P. Dutta's leaden direction, Umrao Jaan never registers a pulse. Nov 13, 2006 Full Review David Chute L.A. Weekly At three and a half hours, J.P. Dutta's lugubrious period melodrama Umrao Jaan defeated me. It feels endless. Audience Member Who would have thought that a three hour movie is really good from beginning to end? This is three times better than any movie about a courtesan. Wonderful story about a child who was kidnapped, sold to a brothel, and who fell in love with someone who is already spoken for. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member very good work, by all who contributed to a marvelous production, that'll be cherished by generations Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A little bit over than 3 hours is just WAY too much for avarage Bollywood viewer like me. Although the story was interesting and I enjoyed costumes also. Great performances made it very entertaning. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good movies, it is a bit of a sad story. The fate of women in 19th century any where in the world was not the best. They were seen as the property of their father or other men. To be in charge of own destiny and monies they went to brothels. Still there they belonged to usually an older woman in charge of the brothel, until maybe they got their own establishment. Still they were used by men. Good but sad movie. Pretty costumes, and dancing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Magnifique! super casting! ça fini mal & toc pour ceux qui pensent les films Indiens finissent toujours bien! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member An amazing movie! Loved it! Brought tears to my eyes. Demands more patience than usual mainstream Hindi fare but rewards the viewer with fine perfs and a story that engages emotionally over the three-hour span. it was nice, not the best though. visually nice and Aishwariya was awsome.
