Critics Consensus

Unbroken is undoubtedly well-intentioned, but it hits a few too many of the expected prestige-pic beats to register as strongly as it should.

Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint Unbroken doesn't penetrate the surface of emotions, remaining a slightly detached, albeit respectful, representation of a potentially touching and inspiring true story. Aug 5, 2019 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online ... so painfully generic that one could probably copy the review of any derivative WWII film and paste it right here. Rated: C Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Lenika Cruz The Atlantic Unbroken falls short of the epic war drama and sweeping testament-to-the-human-spirit it strives to be. Jan 21, 2016 Full Review Alejandro Turdó EscribiendoCine The direction at times seems to borrow too many elements from Eastwood's films without developing the characters who are the heart of this enormous story and... turn out to be quite flat and two-dimensional at times. (ENGLISH) The life of Louis Zamperini had all the ingredients for a great film. Before the war, he was an Olympic athlete with a promising future. Later, fate put him to the test during World War II, radically changing his life. Angelina Jolie brings his story to the big screen with meticulous direction and a traditional approach, though it doesn’t always achieve the emotional depth it aims for. Technically, the film delivers. The cinematography is well-executed, the combat scenes are striking, and Alexandre Desplat’s score fits perfectly. However, despite its impressive visuals, connecting with the protagonist isn’t easy. Jack O’Connell does a solid job, but the script barely allows him to showcase any dimension beyond that of an unbreakable hero. Instead of a nuanced character, he comes across as an overly idealized figure. The film’s most intense moments, such as surviving at sea or enduring captivity in a prisoner-of-war camp, successfully build tension and keep the audience engaged. Still, Unbroken seems more focused on glorifying Zamperini’s resilience than on exploring his vulnerabilities. Everything feels meticulously designed to inspire, leaving little room to portray the raw humanity of his journey. In the end, Unbroken is an uplifting survival drama that works well enough but lacks something to make it truly unforgettable. It’s the kind of film that captivates while you watch it but fades from memory over time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Jenny H This film is as accurate and immersive as a historical film can get. Angelina Jolie did an fantastic job both casting and directing this film. Everything from the acting to the sets are absolutely phenomenal! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Adam Q Unbroken is a captivating film that masterfully depicts the physical torture endured by its characters while also delving into the psychological toll of their experiences. The acting is exceptional, and the movie strikes a powerful balance between brutality and resilience. It’s an intriguing take on a war story, and one I find myself returning to again and again. A solid film that I’d highly recommend to anyone who appreciates war dramas with depth. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Jedi D Not sure how anyone could give this film a bad review. It's inspiring and emotional. Great direction by Angelina Jolie of an outstanding script by the Cohen brothers and a powerful performance by Jack O'Connell. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review Bryan S Too many missed pieces from the book and originating story. It tried, and what was good was great, but the rest was left for the imagination unfortunately. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Dale M Good story. Very touching.
