Russell Edwards Variety [Zhang Yimou] delivers between flashy epics, this tender, understated romancer touches the heart with a disarming, almost stealthy sweetness. Apr 4, 2011 Full Review Hannah Brown Jerusalem Post Zhang skillfully tells an emotionally compelling love story that focuses on the deep injustices of the Cultural Revolution era. It's probably his most emotionally resonant film since To Live. Mar 22, 2016 Full Review Thomas Caldwell Cinema Autopsy While it's a minor work from Zhang I still enjoyed it. william d I was hoping for a portrait of life during the Cultural Revolution. While there is some of that here, this is mostly a romantic drama. The movie drew me in anyway. There are some truly poignant moments, Yimou Zhang's direction is excellent and Dongyu Zhou gives an amazing performance. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the sort of Zhang Yimou film I find more enjoyable. It's a heartfelt, intimate portrait of three dimensional characters. Very humane. Pitiful that it is not available in the USA. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Another winner from Zhang Yimou, with beautiful new actress - Zhou Dongyu Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A stunning Chinese film that centers on a tender & beautiful romance of a teenage girl & a young adult in a country Chinese village. Filmed to perfection on location & honestly some of the most natural & believable performances in many years. It doesn't take long to invest in these characters at all. But sadly the story veers towards a tragedy but it has the most touching & impacting endings of a film I have seen in years. This is one of the most genuine & heartfelt romances I have seen in years. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Zhang Yimou's "Under the Hawthorne Tree" is a simple tale about love in its purest form. No complicated twists, no daredevil stunts, no special effects; just a heart-warming story about the innocent love between two young individuals during China's Cultural Revolution. If you liked "Not One Less" and "The Road Home", then this is a sure-fire hit for you! ;) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member No puedo con los dramas chinos. Vaya tela...
