By envisioning a world where the consumers get consumed, the film calls for a reconceptualization of human and nonhuman relationships. “Under the Skin” denies human exceptionalism and supremacy. Go to Full Review

While this film features some interesting themes, it’s also methodical, mundane at times and feels like a bunch of random brushstrokes. Go to Full Review

…any film or streaming version of Faber’s novel would take an Avatar-level budget to produce, and the commercial possibilities would be limited, but Glazer’s sole misstep as a director was to create this absurdly truncated version of this alienating tale… Go to Full Review

[Director Jonathan] Glazer is less interested in the what and the why than in the texture of the experience, the intensity of the imagery, the sense of adaptation and alienation as this alien starts to connect with her victims. Go to Full Review

sandie 10/19/2023 best movie to ever exist See more Erik E @RT37946513 4d Do not believe a word of these clowns with their positive reviews. The only thing saving this film is some good scenery including Scarlett. If you like lame, subversive indie films go for it. The movie makes almost zero sense. She lures men into a blank room where they sink into nothingness. End of story. The alien attempts to fornicate and the man can't find an entrance blah blah blah. See more Jack F @MovieFan111 May 1 Unless your smart with cryptic movies, you'll have to look up everything afterwards. I think this is good because after you read about what everything means, you realize that it's actually a pretty cool movie. I just don't like the artsy slow burn type. Of course this is an A24 movie--makes sense. So if you know what everything means ahead of time, watching it again would be much more enjoyable I think. Go into this expecting a very strong artsy vibe without very much plot framework to support atmospheric vibe. There is definitely a vague underlying narrative about male/female sexual dichotomies. It's disguised a layer beneath the plot. Spoiler alert: An alien wearing a Scarlett Johansson suit attempts to lure men into her van and then traps them in some kind of futuristic containment field which then seems to remove the men's insides. I assume there is something valuable being used for alien industries in some sense. The men seem to mindlessly walk naked into this black pool of liquid without even noticing it. Hard to avoid seeing an analogy to the dogmatic male sex drive. The alien appears to rethink her life goals towards the end. Ultimately, the hunter becomes the hunted. A man is attempting to assault Scarlett Johansson and discovers She is an alien underneath and sets her on fire. See more Blake- N @PBSAniDom Apr 18 Under the Skin is a haunting and unusual science fiction film that stands completely on its own, rather than feeling like a ripoff of anything like alien invasion action films or franchise-heavy stories such as Terminator or Star Trek. Instead of focusing on spectacle or familiar sci-fi tropes, it takes a much more abstract and psychological approach. Scarlett Johansson delivers a cold, minimal performance that fits perfectly with the film’s detached and eerie tone. The story follows an alien presence moving through Scotland, but it’s less about traditional plot and more about observation, identity, and human behavior. The visual style is striking, often unsettling, and the use of sound and silence creates a constant sense of unease. It’s not an easy film, and it won’t work for everyone, but it clearly has its own vision and purpose. It stands apart as a unique and artistic sci-fi experience. Overall, i'd gave it a 8/10. See more Boo E. @Boo.Eastland Apr 14 This films is purposefully a dive into into a mood / a place at which we don't feel we know the la chafe. We are not privy to the characters agenda because we are not one of them. Her strange silence and disregard for even the most base societal expectations is alluding. We are not sure whether to follow her or run away. Can we run away even if we tried? Or would we too follow the uncanny info the abyss? See more Read all reviews
