Electronic music was born from the ideals of diversity, community, and inclusivity; yet in the last two years only 7% of Billboard's Top 100 DJs were women. Filmed over the summer festival season, Underplayed presents a portrait of the current status of the gender, ethnic, and sexual equality issues through the lens of the female pioneers, next-generation artists, and industry leaders who are championing the change, and inspiring a more diverse pool of role models for future generations. Ultimately, the film explores how gender disparity happens; a theme that transcends music and finds relevance in many of today's industries.

Anne T. Donahue Globe and Mail In addition to featuring contemporary artists, she makes space for the women who pioneered electronica and the necessary acknowledgement that in overlooking their contributions, we're setting up-and-coming female and non-binary artists to fail. Mar 15, 2021 Full Review Chris Willman Variety As long as the doc is content at offering anecdotal looks at about a half-dozen of the female artists who've bucked the odds and made it big, or are still trying to, it's about as inspirational as it means to be. Mar 9, 2021 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media Inspiring docu about women in the electronic music industry. Rated: 4/5 Mar 25, 2021 Full Review Leslie Combemale AWFJ.org Whether you are a fan of dance or electronic music, or just believe parity in all industries benefits everyone, you'll be educated, entertained, infuriated and inspired by Underplayed. Rated: 5/5 Mar 25, 2021 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills Stacey Lee's Underplayed examines a history of gender bias in the DJ'ing and EDM scenes, where you'd think such drastic imbalances would have long been banished. Mar 12, 2021 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Fascinating and stunning archival footage throw welcome light on those unsung genius', before [documentarian Stacey] Lee shifts the focus to a cadre of modern day recognised and beloved artists like Alison Wonderland, Rezz, Nervo and Tygapaw.
