Critics Consensus

A drama as beautifully filmed as it is finely detailed, Undertow is a wonderfully unique love story with a touch of magic.

Reminiscent of such heavenly Hollywood fantasies as "Here Comes Mr. Jordan," Peru's "Undertow" suggests a more passionate, lyrical tale of a soul in search of a body. Go to Full Review

Undertow, for all its narrative tricks, has been given the rhythm and texture of real life, as well as emotional undercurrents that are haunting. Go to Full Review

The first part of the film is... slow-paced and antsy-making, with none of the sensitive and tragic character study of the second part. Go to Full Review

07/21/2018 This movie was beautifully made, and made me feel emotions I generally try to keep under lock and key. I was a bit overwhelmed, but glad for the experience. I highly recommend Undertow. See more 01/18/2016 A beautiful film and a pretty sad one too.Beautiful cinematography combined with an extremely sad and totally heart-breaking script, together with the exceptional acting form this tale of love, identiy and righteousness.Extremely belivable, really well-made.I'm a crying mess. See more 12/29/2015 Excellent movie, portraits beautifully the drama of a homophobic society, culture and love. See more 11/26/2015 This movie is right up there with Brokeback Mountain. Y tambien el mejor pelicula que he visto de mi querido Peru. See more 04/29/2015 Very well done. Tender, thoughtful and full of angst. Tries to express the complications of the major players -- the young gay painter, the married protagonist about to have a child, his wife who is caught in a situation for which she is unprepared. Also, does a good job of handling the cultural distain by adding characters whose humanity overcomes their prejudices, who step up and defy the more conventional elements around them. Best movie about gay men I've ever seen on Netflix. See more Read all reviews
