helder f This movie begins with a young man arriving in a small beach town during the winter. It rains every day, and the only hotel open is run by a woman with the help of another woman and an adopted war orphan who works as free labor. Soon after his arrival, another man arrives. It’s evident that everything and everyone is connected, both past and present. Their stories are more intertwined than one might initially realize. The newcomer’s story is unveiled in fragments, while the stories of those left behind remain elusive yet risk becoming repetitive echoes of his own. The movie belongs to a neo-noir, romantic wave. While the story is somewhat sappy and at times feels more like a theater play than a movie, it’s still a pleasant watch. For those willing to examine the movie’s multiple symbolic moments, it might be a movie to watch more than once. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review matt dukes j Saw this on Criterion in a curated group of films that reveal "French Poetic Realism"... I enjoyed it a lot due to the poetic atmosphere and brooding mysterious characters ---- sounds gloomy, yet it had a magical energy and beauty. A stranger comes to town... but it's always raining -- winter rains. The sea is there, but cold, few go to the beach except in summer. A few people hang out at the inn... and restaurant / bar. The protagonist, clearly a haunted man, walks in the rain, goes to the beach, finds a stone hut he built years ago. He is nervous about something, we don't know what. It's all beautifully shot. What's more moody than a small French town in 1948 or 9 (released in 49) by the sea and a handsome stranger who seems doomed and evokes the sympathy of a beautiful woman. Some have argued that the film is a kind of time travel story where a man goes back to his own past to try to save himself from a bad decision. Or -- he's just helping out a young man stuck in the same circumstances that he was. We root for the guy, but it all seems hopeless. Or is it? Either way, ever see a film where it's always raining? Okay maybe BLADERUNNER.... Rain envelopes people, makes the world smaller. Provides lots of atmosphere.... Worth seeing.
