In 1925, Capt. Petre Dumitriu (George Constantin), his wife, Marie-Therese (Kristin Scott Thomas), and their three children are assigned to a remote town along Romania's border with Bulgaria. When rebellious locals kill his fellow soldiers, Petre arrests eight peasants as retaliation, holding them at his house while awaiting further instructions. Meanwhile, Marie-Therese grows close to the prisoners and tries to prevent their execution after Petre receives orders to kill them.
