What to Know

Critics Consensus

It'll be best enjoyed by audiences with a high tolerance for colorful whimsy, but Unicorn Store is easy to like -- and it suggests Brie Larson has a future behind the camera.

Natalia Winkelman Slate You can practically see the gears of Larson's earnest intentions straining to churn out an earned resolution for her heroine, but it's tainted by the botched coming-of-age lesson we all have to endure to get there. Jul 25, 2019 Full Review Esther Zuckerman Thrillist The movie practically begs you to indulge your inner child. But the adult in me prevailed, and I spent too much of the running time desperate to scream at the screen: Grow up already. Apr 8, 2019 Full Review Kristen Lopez Zimbio Unicorn Store won't set the world on fire, but it reminds women that should appreciate the things they love, no matter how silly they are. Apr 6, 2019 Full Review Aaron Charles InSession Film Visually, Kit’s artistic bent opens up a bevy of colorful visual choices. The acting is strong across the board. Rated: B May 10, 2024 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews Brie Larson shines in her directorial debut Unicorn Store, giving a new definition to growing up in the 21st Century with the story of an art student on a quest to buy a real-life unicorn. Rated: 4/5 Sep 18, 2023 Full Review Nicolas Soto But Why Tho? A Geek Community Unicorn Store is full of humor, light-heated moments, and filled with this sense of nostalgia for a time when life was easier for us. Jan 22, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Jim W This is like an SCTV cast movie (e.g. Best in Show--parents, camp scene) knitted to Safety Not Guaranteed (is it real?) plus some kind of office comedy and sort of a Willy Wonka Samuel L Jackson thing. It's all over the place and no place. The main character is a completely self-absorbed unlikeable arrested development scatterbrain. Yeah, I get it--she's yearning for her unicorn like it's Come Back Little Sheba and has to to mature enough to let go of it. This is basically a loosely-knit bunch of inferior vignettes (camp scene, vacuum scene, boyfriend restaurant scene, magic store scene) that really have no narrative cohesiveness. At the end we have a tacked on maturity arc not supported by the rest of the movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Jordan F This movie is magical. I stumbled upon it while searching for Brie Larson movies and I’m so happy I did. I had zero expectations and I was so pleasantly surprised. It’s quirky and magical and beautiful and touches your soul and inner child. I love Brie Larson and I want her to direct more movies and the cast was so good! It’s cute as it is emotional! 5 stars Brie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review Oli S I really love this movie and I think it holds up 6 years later. This is an abstract and dreamlike film that doesn't take itself too seriously. Its absurdity helps us understand the poignant fears and reality of growing up and merging our childhood fantasies with adult responsibilities. The color in this film is wonderful and nostalgic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review TheInvisiblBoom A solid story about self love and self discovery, and how the best way to connect with your inner child is actually by maturing and allowing others to love you. Touching and comedic, it's a show I'm happy to rewatch many times! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Tito D Even adults will be fascinated by the apparently simple experience of life that the film depicts. Brie Larson - as usual - gives a spotless performance. And as a director, she shows also a skilled confidence with which she guides the cast (Samuel L. Jackson always shines) and the viewer. We look forward to more productions with Larson's signature. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/31/23 Full Review JC c It's a weird ass movie that may be too complicated for some people to comprehend, but I really liked its message. It's evident it's got brie larson all over it, and I love the beginning where they showed the home videos. What I love most about it though was the resolve. It was a good ending, although imo they should've just made kit work for an advertising company or publishing because that's where she belong.
