BadNews R Unseen Evil (2001 – released 2002) This film is honestly one of the hardest horror movies I’ve ever had to sit through. The quality alone makes it almost unwatchable. The script is so poorly written that half the time you don’t even know what direction the story is going in — it jumps around, feels unfocused, and leaves you questioning if the filmmakers themselves even knew what kind of movie they were trying to make. It’s disjointed to the point of being confusing, and instead of building suspense or terror, it just leaves you feeling lost and frustrated. The cinematography is by far one of the worst aspects. It doesn’t even feel like it was shot on professional equipment. Instead, it comes across like it was filmed on an old flip phone from the early 2000s, with grainy, washed-out visuals that look embarrassingly amateurish. And that’s a huge problem, because by 2001 we already had plenty of horror movies with decent to great production value — so there’s really no excuse for how rough and cheap this looks. The acting and casting don’t help matters. None of the performances stand out, and instead of elevating the weak material, most of the actors seem completely detached. Scenes that should be intense or scary end up falling flat, and it just reinforces how off everything feels — from the pacing to the character interactions. By the end of it, I couldn’t even tell you exactly what happened. The movie was that disjointed and badly executed. Nothing stuck, nothing impressed, and nothing scared. It was just a complete mess from start to finish. I cannot in good faith recommend Unseen Evil to anyone. It’s not one of those “so bad it’s good” movies either — it’s simply bad. Between the horrendous cinematography, the sloppy writing, and the completely unengaging performances, this is one horror film that deserves to stay buried and forgotten. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/28/25 Full Review Audience Member In Unseen Evil, a group of archaeologists (led by Battlestar Galactica regular Richard Hatch) head into the forest to uncover an ancient Native burial ground. Unbeknownst to some of the members, the group intends to steal all of the valuable artifacts, rather than dig them up and study them. Either way, the group is attacked by a literal unseen evil, a prehistoric alien beast that is pretty much a carbon copy of predator, making itself invisible and hunting the team down one by one. The invisible angle is used pretty much the whole movie, which seems lame at first, but when you see the bad computer graphic alien they use for this film, you'll think the invisible alien works best. The two good-looking lead women don't get naked unfortunately, but we're treated to a great nude native at the very beginning of the film. Aside from Hatch, horror/sci-fi aficionados are also treated with an appearance by the great Tim Thomerson (Trancers, Dollman, etc) who plays a park ranger in the film. Would've liked to have seen a better fleshed out role from him, but either way, his presence in this somewhat crappy film is a plus. Directed by once promising director Jay Woelfel (who debuted with the artful, yet sadistic Beyond Dream's Door, yet has never managed to do better), Unseen Evil has bits of fun and entertaining schlock on an ultra-low budget, however most folks will think this movie is beyond bad. For what it's worth, it has its moments but I would recommend this to fans of low budget trash, especially ones that are major Predator rip-offs.
