With two obnoxious lead characters and an uneven screenplay, Uptown Girls fails to charm.

Sheila Johnston London Evening Standard Saucereyed and hedgehog-haired, Brittany Murphy thinks, wrongly, that she is adorably kooky as the party girl. Megana M This movie is such an underrated movie and I can't believe I was so late to watch it. The people rating it terribly probably aren't seeing it from a younger perspective, but their perspective is also interesting to view from. This movie highlights the struggles of adulthood and growing up in a more lighthearted way. The struggles the main character goes through (getting evicted, heartbreak, loosing friend and money), show how tough being an adult is, yet she meets a child who is even more adult than her. They both grow with each other, the main character becomes more mature while the child becomes more childlike. For me personally, this movie made me cry because it reminds me of loosing my relationship with my childhood self, and watching the inner child in me grow up. It shows how life is insanely hard, and your being forced to go through with it. This movie is slightly predictable, but honestly, if the plot didn't happen, the movie would not have such meaning from it. The script is slightly underdone, I agree with that, but the meaning isn't really shown in the direct dialogue of the movie, but through the actions. The symbolization of Coney Island and the spinning tea cup scene where they both realize how similar they are entirely, despite the completely different personality and ages, and it shows how life can affect everyone. Also the scene where Molly breaks it off with Neal isn't that bad of dialogue and many people can relate to the meaning it says. It isn't your average teenager movie, but its an adult movie that really only growing adults could really relate to, its about finding the inner light within yourself when the rest of the world is covered in darkness. It breaks my heart to see the reviews being so harsh, but I completely respect their opinions and they are valid even though my interpretation was completely different coming from someone who is younger than most of these critics. I will take a point off because the plot is quite predictable and that I agree with that. Women that did not have mother or father in their lives growing up or women that have felt abandonment would understand the movie. Yes , it’s a funny movie. however , this movie is mainly focused on a message that is supposed to be deep and true to the heart. I loved this movie when I was a little kid and 15 years later I still love it and it still makes me cry. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/25 Full Review Audience Member Not bad but also not the best.
