Critics Consensus

Valentine is basically a formulaic throwback to conventional pre-Scream slasher flicks. Critics say it doesn't offer enough suspense or scares to justify its addition to the genre.

Jamie Blanks' Valentine has aged rather well. A movie I didn't care for at the time of its release, I now see a lot more of merit in this slasher than I did back in 2001. Go to Full Review

The contradictory sexual politics in this lightweight slasher suggest that at some point it was meant to satirize the traditional mores of the self-satisfied female characters. Go to Full Review

In the new teen slasher flick Valentine, a public-school nerd, now grown up, seeks to systematically murder all the girls who wouldn't dance with him at the Grade 6 Valentine's dance. Or maybe that's not what happens. It s hard to tell. Go to Full Review

Unlike the charmingly 90s Urban Legend, Jamie Blanks’ follow-up was late to the party, running on the previous decade’s creative fumes. Go to Full Review

The frequent jump-scares and the various women spontaneously finding themselves in ill-lit, isolated locations prove to be only middlingly creative. Go to Full Review

See more David L @MagicLinckTheThird Oct 2 The late ’90s and early 2000s saw a major resurgence of the slasher genre, kicked off by Wes Craven’s classic Scream. Among the wave of slashers that followed was Valentine (2001), a film that I think is one of the most underrated entries of the era—and it just so happens to be set around my favorite holiday (and birthday), Valentine’s Day. The story begins with a flashback to a middle school Valentine’s Day dance, where an awkward, nerdy boy works up the courage to ask several popular girls to dance. Each cruelly rejects him, and when one girl falsely claims he assaulted her, a group of bullies viciously beats him, leaving him humiliated. Fast-forward 13 years, and those same girls are being hunted down one by one by a trench coat–wearing killer in a chilling Cupid mask. Before each murder, the victims receive threatening Valentine’s cards, tying the holiday theme cleverly into the horror. Valentine delivers some creative, holiday-inspired kills, a creepy villain design, and a story with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end. If you’re looking for a solid slasher with a unique Valentine’s Day spin, this overlooked gem is definitely worth checking out. There was a few details that made some parts of it make no sense, as one falling through the poster directly down but then bumping into the emergency exit. Nonetheless, it was an entertaining movie! See more Farah R @Farah Apr 22 Although not as bad as the low ratings and terrible reviews make it seem, Valentine is still a mediocre slasher that’s only good to waste a couple of boring hours. See more Andrew H Apr 11 Valentine isn’t a good film, but it’s endlessly watchable. The plot’s obvious; the twist lands like a brick on a pillow, and every actor looks monumentally bored. Seriously, you can see them thinking about lunch as they act—but that’s the charm. It’s glossy, cheesy, and totally of its time. The killer design is fantastic, the mood is weirdly hypnotic, and it nails that “so bad it’s good” sweet spot. Urban Legend, also directed by Jamie Blanks, might be technically better—snappier script, better acting, more energy—but Valentine hits differently. It’s a boring, beautiful mess… and I love it for that. Though let’s be clear, Urban Legend was a better movie. It's an outstanding double bill, though See more Read all reviews
