Teenager Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) is a Dhampir -- a human/vampire hybrid. Her best friend is Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry), a princess of the Moroi -- mortal, peaceful vampires. Both teens attend St. Vladamir's Academy, a secret haven for those like them. Rose trains with a handsome mentor (Danila Kozlovsky) to guarantee her place as Lissa's guardian -- although she may have to sacrifice everything to protect Lissa from enemies both within St. Vladamir's walls and outside them.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it may appeal to its built-in fanbase, Vampire Academy's Twilight-meets-Mean Girls conceit borrows lazily from its predecessors and offers few laughs or thrills to complement its overstuffed backstory.

Roxana Hadadi Punch Drunk Critics Another young-adult adaptation bites the dust. Rated: 0.5/5 Jan 9, 2017 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com A film that attempts to satire the popular love triangle romances of the current day, yet falls into the same tired cliches of said films. Rated: D+ Apr 23, 2015 Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) I thought it was a complete mess. I thought the teenage dialogue was puerile and that was a shame because Daniel Waters wrote the screenplay for HEATHERS, which is one of the really nice films about school but that was a long time ago. Rated: 1/5 Mar 10, 2014 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast The mix of horror and comedy don't entirely work and the supporting characters aren't memorable, but as a comedic lead, this is the perfect star vehicle for Zoey Deutch. Audience Member The acting is so rigid and flavorless, it makes the Twilight Saga look like Oscar Award winning performances. I can't even begin with how horrible the script is, and how bad the plot was. It makes a poorly written fanfiction by a 13 year old with bad grammar look more appealing. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Jade G Loved the books, loved the movie, wish they would continue on with making another movie or five Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review The fitness gram P Brilliant movie. Vampire academy is my favourite book series and it does a great staying true to the universe created in the books 10/10 movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Nim T This film was watchable with Zoey Deutch, but was not enough to overcome the cliche title of Vampire Academy. Before I started to watch this film, I would believe it might be possibly related to Twilight, but unfortunately worst than I expected as Twilight does have some essence of a story that is about a couple. In here, it's unclear of whether a couple exists between the young cast. I did not like Kurylenko's portrayal because she gives off a nasty snobbiness that brought frustration as I reviewed it. The love that the characters have for one another is weak to none, complicated by Sarah Hyland's and Gabriel Byrne's transition. This is a film that I watched once, and most likely only once. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/22/23 Full Review ziggy r Dracula would put put a stake in his own heart and go into the sun. This movie is very very bad. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/16/23 Full Review Adina N I think the movie is quite pretty and an accurate portrayal of the world created in the book series. In my opinion this is a kind of movie where reading the books first is a must. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/23 Full Review Read all reviews
