      Priyan B Best movie of all time! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Birithivy Y Nayakan - 10/10. Mani Ratnam's magnum opus with Kamal Hassan is one of the greatest, and to some, the greatest tamil film in tamil cinema history. A film about the rise and fall of a city Don, Nayakan transports you through that gangster's life and shows you how they achieve the level of power that they end up achieving. Inspired by another classic gangster film, The Godfather, this film however focuses on one character rather than two, and it hones in on the character's grey shades. The don isn't a great guy overall, and he isn't a bad guy overall. The way Ratnam justifies the character and shows both sides of the coin is incredible. To think this was made really early in his career shows how great of a filmmaker he would end up becoming. P.C. Sriram's iconic camera work inspired many cinematographers, with his excellent use of lighting and capturing the intensity of the scenes. Kamal Hassan gives one of his greatest performances in his career. How he shapes his character as he ages, from the way he talks and walks to the way he runs his empire, it shows the exact detail that the actor had in mind while doing the character. Ilaiyaraja's iconic score as well helps bring life to the film and makes it feel even more epic. Overall, its a film that stands the test of time. And though we have seen countless copycats of the film, the original will always standout for its way for paving the path for those other films. Masterpiece!
