The lush and breathtaking beauty of the Alps, filmed with painterly grace under natural light from frigid winter to redemptive spring, provides the physical and emotional backdrop for 'Vermiglio,' Maura Delpero’s visionary film, which won the Silver Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. This singular portrait of a sprawling family, set in the small, mountainous village of Vermiglio during the waning days of WWII, follows a series of dramatic, consequential events after the arrival of a taciturn Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe De Domenico), who hides out in town after deserting the army. While there, the soldier develops a romance with the family's eldest daughter, Lucia (Martina Scrinzi). 'Vermiglio' shows the lives of a provincial family in a remote village suspended in time by the customs of a fading era. Conjuring stories from her own family's past, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human tale that recalls the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema, but through Lucia's perspective 'Vermiglio' feels distinct and novel.

Zachary Lee RogerEbert.com Delpero’s film is quiet in depicting change but basks in the incremental disruptions that can change and disrupt the status quo of power. Nov 1, 2024 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It is wonderfully acted with unaffected naturalism by its cast of professionals and newcomers and plays an extravagant, almost shameless pizzicato on the audience’s heartstrings. Rated: 4/5 Sep 11, 2024 Full Review Leslie Felperin Hollywood Reporter The portrait of a nearly vanished rural way of life remains compelling, and the melodrama engaging enough to suggest this might have been improved by being spread thinner as a TV series. Sep 3, 2024 Full Review Lucia Ahrensdorf The Film Stage Delpero masterfully captures the characters’ experiences and psychology through gesture, performance, and framing rather than dialogue. Krichman’s cinematography, perhaps the best of the year, invokes painting and theater. Rated: A- Nov 5, 2024 Full Review Ankit Jhunjhunwala The Playlist Vermiglio isn’t a generic portrait of an Alpine village, it is culled from Delpero’s family history and has the texture and sweep of a novel or, even better, a memoir. Rated: A Oct 20, 2024 Full Review Sarah Manvel In Their Own League It's remarkable not only how it manages a large and complicated cast but also in how it uses great simplicity to convey the complicated passage of time.
