What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's as scattershot as its predecessor, but V/H/S/2 rounds up enough horror filmmaking talent to deliver a satisfyingly nasty -- albeit uneven -- dose of gore.

Justin Lowe The Hollywood Reporter Less is not necessarily more in this slimmed-down collection. Dec 31, 2013 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian There are some dull stretches here, but also some grisly instant hits: nasty, deplorable, vulgar and sometimes brilliant. Rated: 3/5 Oct 10, 2013 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies Someone please give Gareth Evans lots of money to make amazing, violent, creative horror films. Rated: 3/5 Oct 10, 2013 Full Review Brian Bisesi Horror Movie Club Podcast Unlike its predecessor, V/H/S/2 only has one speed. This fast, loud, and abrasive film would have benefited from one or two slower, more tense segments to vary the tone. However, the thrills of A Ride in the Park and Safe Haven make this worth a watch. Rated: 3/5 Sep 4, 2024 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Pulls off the seemingly impossible by being an anthology that succeeds with nearly every vignette. Between the merits of each individual segment and the variety of horrors chronicled, it's arguably the highpoint of the franchise. TheMovieSearch R V/H/S/2 is easily one of the worst horror sequels I’ve ever sat through. From the very beginning, it’s a complete disaster—confused, chaotic, and utterly devoid of purpose. I honestly can’t figure out what these filmmakers were trying to achieve, and I can’t even understand why I continue to give this series a chance. It’s like watching a creative train wreck in slow motion. The direction feels completely lost, as if the filmmakers had no real vision or understanding of what story they were trying to tell. It’s as though they wanted to mimic the documentary-style tension of The Blair Witch Project but lacked the restraint and atmosphere that made that film effective. Instead, V/H/S/2 tries to connect itself to the first movie just enough to claim continuity, yet nothing actually fits together. It’s disjointed, incoherent, and feels like a handful of random horror shorts forced into one film without any meaningful cohesion. The writing is just as bad—possibly worse. Whoever penned this screenplay clearly had no idea what tone they wanted to strike. It jumps between over-the-top gore, nonsensical supernatural elements, and poorly developed characters, all while pretending to have some deeper purpose that never materializes. It’s a confused mess that feels more like a failed film-school project than a legitimate horror entry. The casting choices don’t help either. Most of the performances are flat, unconvincing, and emotionless, leaving no room for the audience to connect with anyone. It’s hard to even root for the characters because they feel so poorly written and one-dimensional. While I’ll admit it’s slightly better than the first V/H/S, that’s not saying much—it’s like comparing two disasters and deciding which one burned slower. The improvement is minimal at best. The scares are predictable, the pacing is sloppy, and the entire execution feels rushed and lazy. In the end, V/H/S/2 is an exhausting, frustrating watch that fails on nearly every level. It doesn’t honor the horror genre; it cheapens it. I can’t recommend it to anyone, not even out of curiosity. It’s one of those films that reminds you that sometimes, sequels really don’t need to exist. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/25 Full Review chris m the same but a little worse. i completely understand that some viewers prefer the second part of 'v/h/s', especially for its explicit and grotesque violence, which undeniably raises the intensity compared to the first installment. for many, that is the most attractive aspect and what makes the sequel stand out. however, in my opinion, in terms of stories and the realism of the effects, it is inferior to the first. even so, it remains entertaining and keeps the essence of the found footage format. the film retains the roughness and imperfection of the saga, although this time with better image quality. the sharpness and definition are improved, allowing some details to be appreciated more clearly. however, this technical upgrade also makes the blood and certain visual effects appear less believable and more artificial than in the first part. even so, the horror still works and there are moments that are very effective. another strong point of 'v/h/s/2' is the variety. each segment offers a different approach, avoiding monotony. although the stories seem less original and less interesting than those in the first installment, they are still good and provide entertainment within the characteristic style of the saga. for me, 'v/h/s/2' remains a good sequel, more bloody and explicit visually, but inferior to the first in terms of stories and realism. recommended for those who enjoyed the first installment and are looking for more extreme horror, although personally i will always remember the original as the best of the saga. spanish: lo mismo pero un poco peor. entiendo perfectamente que haya espectadores que prefieran la segunda parte de 'v/h/s', especialmente por su violencia explícita y grotesca, que sin duda sube el nivel con respecto a la primera entrega. para muchos, eso es lo más atractivo y lo que hace que la secuela destaque. pero, a mi parecer, en cuanto a historias y realismo de los efectos, es inferior a la primera. aun así, sigue siendo entretenida y mantiene la esencia del formato found footage. la película conserva lo tosco y lo imperfecto de la saga, aunque esta vez con mejor calidad de imagen. la nitidez y definición son superiores, lo que hace que algunos detalles se aprecien mejor. sin embargo, esa mejora técnica también hace que la sangre y ciertos efectos visuales se vean menos creíbles y más artificiales que en la primera parte. aun así, el terror sigue funcionando y hay momentos que resultan muy efectivos. otro de los puntos fuertes de 'v/h/s/2' es la variedad. cada segmento ofrece un enfoque distinto, evitando la monotonía. aunque las historias me parecen menos originales y menos interesantes que las de la primera entrega, siguen siendo buenas y aportan entretenimiento dentro del estilo característico de la saga. para mí, 'v/h/s/2' sigue siendo una buena secuela, más sangrienta y explícita en lo visual, pero inferior a la primera en cuanto a historias y sensación de realismo. recomendable para quienes ya disfrutaron la primera entrega y buscan un terror más extremo, aunque personalmente siempre recordaré la original como la mejor de la saga. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/25 Full Review Alejandro C Un espanto de película. Hacia mucho tiempo que no veía una película tan mala. Verdaderamente aburrida y lamentablemente ridícula.🥶👎👎👎 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/28/25 Full Review Keliane F O filme é bom mas ainda dá um pouco fraco Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Erik B The second compilation in the V/H/S series continues the same storyline from the original. Pretty fun, but some of the stories feel quite familiar. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/03/24 Full Review Rami A This is even worse than its predecessor. None of these stories feel authentic and come off as rather strange. In fact, they resemble terrible "horror porn" films. The lack of coherence in the narratives makes it difficult to engage with the characters, and the superficial plot twists only add to the overall disappointment. Rather than creating a sense of suspense or fear, the sequences often feel forced and exaggerated. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
