TheMovieSearch R Chyna: Wrestling with Demons is a powerful and emotional documentary that finally gives some long-overdue attention to one of the most groundbreaking figures in professional wrestling history: Joanie Laurer, known to millions simply as Chyna. The film does a solid job showing both the triumphs and the tragedies of her career. It’s inspiring to see how she broke barriers in a male-dominated industry and earned respect through sheer talent and presence. At the same time, it’s absolutely heartbreaking to witness what she endured behind the scenes — the judgment, the body shaming, and the cruel rumors that led many to question her gender simply because she didn’t fit the traditional mold of a female wrestler. Hearing how she altered her appearance — from facial surgery to breast implants, which later ruptured during a match — just to be accepted by an audience that often misunderstood her, is gut-wrenching. The mental and emotional toll she carried was immense. You can feel her loneliness, especially in the later years when drugs and alcohol became her only escape. Knowing that this pain eventually cost her her life makes her story even harder to watch. What’s equally frustrating is how WWE continues to ignore her legacy. Despite everything she accomplished, she still hasn’t been inducted into the Hall of Fame as a solo performer — something she’s more than earned. Watching this documentary only intensifies that frustration. It’s painful to see how little recognition she’s received from the very company she helped elevate and define. Still, the film captures the heart of who Chyna truly was — strong, misunderstood, and deeply human. While the documentary doesn’t dive into every corner of her story and leaves some questions unanswered, it does something few others have: it restores her dignity. It reminds viewers that Chyna wasn’t just a female wrestler — she was a pioneer who broke barriers for women everywhere and reshaped what power looked like in professional wrestling. Chyna: Wrestling with Demons is a tough but necessary watch. It honors a woman who deserved better from the world around her and ensures her legacy will never fade into silence. We find out how many users are in the world and how the naive can really get hoodwinked down the wrong path. This is really, really heartbreaking. It's also well-filmed and layered. You just can't believe what you're watching! Final Score: 9/10 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
