Mort P @Mort. 2 days ago Fantastic cast and a story well told combined with very interesting (fun once adjusted to it) camera work made for a great time at the cinema. No, the story of a main character overcoming significant hurdles isn't an original plot, and Haley Bennett's performance does seem a bit one-note for the first acts (as, perhaps, it should have: the determined woman). But by the end, for me, there were so many great qualities (some subplots trusting the audience by remaining subtle). I came, in part, for the cast members I knew (Jennifer Saunders, Jack Whitehall, Timothy Spall, Sally Phillips, and more are always great) and left thinking the others were equally brilliant. Ironically for a film which wants women to be given full credit for their work, it turns her romantic comedy into a story about a woman who wants to be an astronomer (there is a single glancing reference to astronomy in the text). Men, of course, try to prevent her. With the exception of William Rodney, who is there fundamentally to be laughed at, all males are villains unless they are gay or from an ethnic minority. This is a film which prioritises issues over plot and character. Some elements of the film's plot, such as when William Rodney (delightfully played by Jack Whitehall) becomes engaged to Cassandra prompting Mr Hilberry (the brilliant Timothy Spall) to call him an adventurer, were so underplayed as to be almost completely incomprehensible if you hadn't read the book. No explanation/follow up of various issues eg women's right to vote, homosexuality, misogyny,. Music distracting/ not appropriate to the era. Seemed like ideas on post it notes jumbled up and left to audience to re arrange. Not engaging. Experimental? See more Valerie P @RT62815632 Jun 26, 2026 The cast did not allow me to become emotionally invested in the characters. I am guessing this is partly to do with the director, screenwriting and actors. I did not bond with the lead actress who seemed to be channeling Kate Winslet. It didn’t gel. Poor casting, dialogue and lack of connection between the actors.
