Calum Marsh New York Times Almost all of its action footage has been repurposed, inexplicably, from old low-budget Filipino action movies from the 1980s and ’90s. Jan 17, 2023 Full Review Erik Childress Movie Madness Podcast Apart from a late cameo from Mark Hamill, this is a film whose best joke is used up after about 10 minutes. Which is a shame as it is a fun idea for a joke but probably works best as a short rather than a feature. joan f hilarious! loved the cast. full of easter eggs! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty terrible. There's a lot about this movie that simply blows it, as it is neither funny, clever, and feels like it was written by someone who only barely understands video games, and storytelling for that matter. I'm gonna rant because it's fun: the film has very little understanding of video games. The game itself is incredibly loose in its definition. It's unclear what the rules of the game are, and it only further showcases the sloppiness of the film. The story is terrible, and the jokes are even worse. The few moments of minor humor are tarnished by being repeated three or four times without any variation. The lead actor had charisma, though, so he basically carried the film, despite his character being whiny and lacking focus. The second lead was also decent, and Mark Hamill's minor role was one of the few refreshing aspects of the film. The villain, though, overacted so hard it hurt, even for a character designed to chew scenery. Ultimately, it was shallow, unfunny, and pointless, and one of the worst movie I've seen in a long time. Looking back, it had a lot of potential to be exceptionally clever, or even so bad it's good, but fails on every account and becomes simply a bad movie.
