What to Know

Critics Consensus

Vortex is Gaspar Noé at his most unflinchingly pitiless -- but viewers who can make it through will be rewarded with a haunting contemplation of death.

Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) It is sincere, and I think the split screen works a lot better than I thought. Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Edward Porter Times (UK) For all its compassion, though, it’s still a gruelling work in its account of old age’s terrors. Rated: 4/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times A meaningful engagement with elder care, dementia and mortality, born of the director’s own experiences with his mother and his near-fatal brain haemorrhage. Rated: 5/5 Jul 16, 2022 Full Review William Stottor Loud and Clear Reviews A haunting rumination on old age and death, but lacks the narrative and emotional consistency needed to make it fully engaging. Rated: 3/5 Jul 18, 2024 Full Review Hector A. Gonzalez InSession Film This is Gaspar Noé at his most approachable and simultaneously disconsolate. Rated: B+ Jul 21, 2023 Full Review C.H. Newell Father Son Holy Gore Noé focuses on the end stages of life and how ageing, as well as illnesses like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, can turn us into haunted houses, ghosts of ourselves and our lives trapped within the still-living vessel of our flesh and blood. favio c Una pieza de Gaspar que golpea con mensajes sencibles pero sin dejar de lado su parte psicodelica. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/23 Full Review dave d A gripping and difficult watch which will leave the engaged viewer contemplating death, relationships, and much more. It is in a split screen format which works most of the time, but also can be a distraction when the viewer is watching the same scene from two angles. There is so much that is relatable with Gaspar Noé's latest, but it is the actors that make this work. Dario Argento and Françoise Lebrun play a married couple both in failing health and they both use nuance and subtlety to make a point. The story is simple, yet perfectly executed. Final Score: 8.4/10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/01/23 Full Review Jason R Impressively dull https://uberscaryblog.blogspot.com/2023/02/to-all-those-whose-brains-will.html Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/23 Full Review Hasani W It's called vortex for a reason. I went through a whirlwind of emotions. This film hit me pretty hard with the past three years of seeing the decline and death of loved ones and depicted how surreal these experiences are. A dream within a dream. Needless to say, this is probably a film you only need to watch once. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Melancholia Definitely Gaspar Noe's most sentimental film. The director sure has a distinct way to bring his thoughts about life and it's inevitable end to camera in many distinct forms. All of the movies I've seen of him always contemplate life and death in various ways. It's hard for a person to bear it all alone, so it's great to see it addressed in cinema so you know you're not alone. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/30/22 Full Review Ludovica G Heartbreaking and boring.
