      Critics Consensus

The humor is on the level of a corny sitcom, and the tone is condescending.

kevin c This movie boasts a great cast with Charlize Theron, Patrick Swayze, Billy Bob Thornton and Natasha Richardson about two couples on a road trip to Reno together, both having problems with their marriages which comes to a head. This is more of a comedy/drama which isn't bad, but seems a better film could have been made with this cast. Penelope Cruz also shows up in a small role. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review farah r Waking Up In Reno is definitely better than lots of other comedies. But still fails to be amongst the great ones. It's more of a sitcom humor than actual hearty laughter. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member classic billy bob but horrible ending. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Meh. So-so road movie about a pair of not so smart couples on their way to Reno. The strong cast, including Oscar and Tony award winning actors Billy Bob Thornton, Charlize Theron and Natasha Richardson, oh and there's also Patrick Swayze, makes the film watchable and manage to carry a pretty weak script. There's also David Koechner, Penélope Cruz and Tony Orlando in supporting roles, but the real problem with the film is that it's not just that funny. Kind of a sad coda for top tier cinematographer William A. Fraker ("Rosemary's Baby", "Tombstone", "Bullitt"). Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Hands down the best performance of Patrick Swayzes career. This comedy has some genuine dusty moments laced with poignant truths about life and love. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member All that's missing is the line "You got a purdy mouth." Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

      J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Like Pabst Blue Ribbon, which the characters drink by the case, this bubba comedy about cheating spouses is good for a cheap buzz. May 15, 2009 Full Review Tim Cogshell Boxoffice Magazine The whole damn thing is ripe for the Jerry Springer crowd. It's all pretty cynical and condescending, too. Rated: 2/5 Nov 3, 2002 Full Review Richard Roeper Ebert & Roeper I like all four of the lead actors a lot and they manage to squeeze a few laughs out of the material, but they're treading water at best in this forgettable effort. Oct 29, 2002 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews A redneck romantic comedy about marital infidelity, that is crude and unfunny. Apr 29, 2009 Full Review Urban Cinefile Critics Urban Cinefile Four boring characters, a painfully unfunny road trip and drama that's not quite as convincing as a daytime soap opera add up to a wretched time in this redneck romantic comedy.
