J. R. Jones Chicago Reader The secret police after the December 1970 strikes at the Gdansk Shipyard. Yet the steely dissident, played by Robert Wieckiewicz, never really comes into focus as a private person. Nov 7, 2013 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies The turbulent life and times of Lech Walesa forms the basis for this superior biopic from Polish legend Andrzej Wajda. Rated: 4/5 Oct 17, 2013 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian A movie with terrific force and irresistible storytelling gusto - and a first-rate lead performance by Robert Wieckiewicz. Rated: 4/5 Oct 11, 2013 Full Review Giuseppe Sedia Kino Mania Despite the theological overtones of the title, Wajda has avoided moulding a hagiographic portrait of Wałęsa. The film demonstrates once again the legendary director’s appetite and ability to swallow, historicize and rework his nation’s recent history. Audience Member When I was growing up one of the tings I clearly remember was the Polish dock strike in Gdansk and its moustachioed leader Lech Walesa. Now legendary director Andrzej Wajda gives us the story behind the headlines . Walesa was always a troublemaker but when the communist dream begins to turn sour he begins to question the rising prices and poverty most of his friends and co workers find themselves in. The films follows Walesa as he is pursued and persecuted by the authorities for speaking out leading to him being arrested numerous times and at one point being held against his will while events unfolded in the shipyards and the creation of the Solidarity union movement of which Walesa became the figurehead. Wajda combines actual footage with his actors and the film shows just how tough the communists were when it came to the to the subject of civil rights for all. Some may find this all a bit worthy and earnest but I have to say I was gripped from the very start and the film covers a vital part in the eventual downfall of the Iron Curtain government's. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member it could've edited better, i yawn through the movie Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member A standard biopic with some good actors. The ultimate letdown; after peppering the movie with some great Polish punk music the end credits come up accompanied by a pedestrian pop tune. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought I would have the whole cinema to myself, but it was full of Polish people. It made it even better. The story of Lech Walesa, the famous Polish union leader when Poland was under Soviet influence and his incredible rise until he was elected President in 1990. Directed by veteran and Oscar winning director Andrzej Wajda, the film focuses on the crucial years between 1979 and 1989 when "Solidarnosc" emerges as the first free union that challenges the established communist power. Narrated through flashbacks, we see Walesa in his personal life and political role along these 10 years with a mix of film and archive footage. Interesting, funny and informative, the 2 hours go by quickly. Great performances by the main actors portraying Walesa and his wife. A great biopic. - Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
