WALTZING WITH BRANDO follows Brando (Billy Zane) -- then the most famous actor in the world -- as he filmed Mutiny on the Bounty and bought a tiny and uninhabitable island in Tahiti. His intent was to escape his hectic Hollywood lifestyle and show the world the path to sustainability. To achieve this goal, he plucks Judge (Jon Heder), an obscure but idealistic Los Angeles architect, from his stable existence and convinces him that together they could build the world's first truly sustainable ecological retreat.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Anchored by Billy Zane's remarkable performance, Waltzing with Brando is a sporadically engaging yet tonally uneven portrait of Hollywood excess that charms in moments but falters in emotional resonance.

Bob Mondello NPR Billy Zane's uncanny resemblance to a 40-something Marlon Brando is put to intermittently amusing use in this breezy, if scattered, comedy. Sep 24, 2025 Full Review John Serba Decider This waltz is all left feet. Nov 13, 2025 Full Review Mark Jackson Epoch Times Billy Zane’s bravura performance as Brando deserved better; it deserved a top-notch vehicle—probably a drama. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 6, 2025 Full Review Aaron Neuwirth We Live Entertainment Zane is completely locked in as Brando, and I think what he captures is how much Brando didn’t seem to revere his own position as an actor. Rated: 7/10 Oct 16, 2025 Full Review Rosa Parra The Latino Slant This is a film you can easily waltz past. Rated: 4/10 Oct 7, 2025 Full Review Marlon Wallace The M Report (WBOC.com) The re-creations here are virtually indistinguishable from the real footage. Fishman's production could honestly be confused for documentary footage... whatever the makeup and hair department did only made things that much more flawless. GUYFIERY Billy Zane embodied the essence that is Brando ! Kon Heder looks like and Pete Holmes could be brothers. Very entertaining. Shame this doesn't get the attention. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review Terry C The story was very interesting considering most people never knew much about Marlon Brando. The location was beautiful and the acting by Billy Zane was outstanding. Definitely worth seeing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/20/25 Full Review Con M Waltzing with Brando really surprised me with how grounded and honest it felt. It’s not your usual Hollywood take on an icon, instead, it strips away the myth and shows Brando as a flawed, fascinating person wrestling with purpose, ego, and the world around him. The story feels deeply human, almost intimate, like you’re being let in on something personal rather than performed for. Every conversation carries weight, and the emotional beats hit because they come from truth, not spectacle. Billy Zane delivers a performance that’s alive in every sense; sharp, unpredictable, and full of quiet emotion. He doesn’t imitate Brando; he channels him, finding those moments of tenderness and turmoil that make you forget you’re watching an actor. There’s a real sense of restraint and vulnerability in his portrayal, and it gives the film its pulse. By the end, it feels less like a biopic and more like a meditation on art, isolation, and what it means to truly live. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/12/25 Full Review Caroline C Great film, really enjoyed watching it and stunning location. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review Johnny D. Billy Zane is endlessly impressive as the charismatic film legend Marlon Brando. The film has unique scene transitions, beautiful set pieces and more heart than most films I've seen this year; I just wish the ending was a tad more climactic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/06/25 Full Review Patrick C Bernard Judge (Jon Heder) heads to Tahiti to scout the area for a potential hotel opportunity. While there, he's put in contact with Marlon Brando (Billy Zane) who's interested in using his talents to build his own slice of Heaven on his private island. The film tells the story of the friendship that blossomed between the 2 men during this period and afterwards. Zane nails the look of Brando as he's a chameleon, difficult to decipher where he ends and Brando begins. However, as much as he looked the part, it appears Zane intentionally tried not to sound like the actor, which was a missed opportunity in my opinion as Zane could have gotten lost in the actor even more. The film highlights Brando's affinity for the environment and the island he then called home, appearing to be very conscience of the footprint he was making in Tahiti. But don't be fooled as the film follows Judge, this is his story that he's telling and while Brando is a big part of it, he's not the whole part of it. The story plays it safe without much going on underneath the surface. A film that looked decent enough from the trailer but still failed to deliver in the end.
