Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy The "best" of the early Gamera films; to a certain degree that works against it... it's probably a bit easier to actually enjoy a real howler of a terrible monster movie. Rated: 4/10 Aug 14, 2014 Full Review John Beifuss Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) Barugon has a battering-ram tongue, nictitating eyelids and purplish blood; but what elevates him from weird to unforgettable is the deadly rainbow ray that emanates from his back -- a surreal, cartoonish and even poetical touch... Audience Member Another one of Gamera (turtle monster) movie that followed the cliché plot of Japanese creature feature. Nothing to see here. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member After the first film failed to copy the sweat and blood of Godzilla, this one's a breath of fresh air with a compelling story and characters as apposed to hollow shells. I highly recommend this film to any giant monster fan. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member The second Gamera film is not a whole lot better than the first, but it's a heck of a lot more fun. Gamera is barely in his own film. Most of the film follows Barugon ... sweet frost-tongue-shooting, destructive-rainbow-beaming Barugon. After an opening set on a tropical island populated by Japanese folks in blackface, Barugon hatches out of a giant gem stone and smashes a bunch of cities. He meets Gamera briefly, but freezes him, taking Gamera out of the movie until the climax. That's fine ... because Barugon is a big pile of arbitrary monster craziness and the character's attempts to stop him defy logic. I really kind of loved this one. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the best Gamera films ever. The best thing is that there's no annoying kids, just adults, and no childish theme song. The fights between humans were great and brutal as well as the monsters' fights. One of the more mature kaiju flicks. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member good story and monster battles Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member A rustic group of n'er do wells invade an island paradise in order to steal a legendary opal. Naturally, this results in the unleashing of a giant lizard-seal who can shoot ice beams out of its tongue and rainbow-rays of death out of its back. Aside from the 11th hour ingenuity of human scientists, this kaiju's only threat is the flying turtle with tusks who captured Japan's heart in the previous film. Gamera vs. Barugon is a cheaply-made piece of crap even if you compare it to other monster mashes of the same era. There is some camp appeal to be found here, but one isn't likely to get much out of this movie unless they watch its appearance on Mystery Science Theater 3000.
