William Bibbiani TheWrap Despite the fundamental problems with any Watchmen adaptation, and the serviceable but not entirely effective visual aesthetic, Chapter 1 does a respectable job of retelling this story. Aug 13, 2024 Full Review Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness .... this film version, while incomplete as both a first part of two and because it must cut or reframe the source material, still manages to make one feel like they’re experiencing "Watchmen" uniquely. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 3, 2024 Full Review Jeff Beck The Blu Spot What we get with "Watchmen: Chapter I" is a remarkably faithful adaptation of the graphic novel that has a few flaws here and there, but which ends up being a pretty good rendition of the material. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 28, 2024 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media Fans who know the story will understand what the story is trying to do (something to do with Veidt), but for the uninitiated, these scenes will be confusing. Aug 27, 2024 Full Review Bradley Gibson Film Threat Watchmen: Chapter 1 is a delight for fans, and great follow up for those who enjoyed the comics and want to see more. Rated: 9/10 Aug 23, 2024 Full Review Jonathan Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast Despite filmmakers’ best intentions, the film is faithful to a fault — in essence, an abridged and superfluous version of the celebrated graphic novel. Alex R Unnecessary.Computer animation feels out of place, shot for shot take on the comic lacking soul and depth. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review matthias s **Watchmen Part 1** is a blast for any die-hard fan of the comic. As someone who considers *Watchmen* one of my all-time favorites, seeing this iconic story brought to life was so much fun. The animation is fantastic, capturing the gritty, dark atmosphere of the original perfectly. Brandon Vietti, who’s already directed some of my favorite Batman animated films, absolutely nails it here. The voice acting is on point too—every character feels true to the comic. Sure, it doesn’t really do anything new or creative with the source material, but honestly, it doesn’t need to. The comic is a masterpiece, and this adaptation respects that. My only gripe is the pacing, which drags a bit toward the end. That’s the only thing keeping it from a 4-star rating. If you love *Watchmen*, you’ll definitely love this. A faithful, gripping adaptation worth watching! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Logan D The death of a superhero begins a sequence of events that draw his former comrades out of retirement. Imagine an adaptation of a beloved comic book stayed faithful to the material! It's been decades since I read the seminal work by Alan Moore (whose name does not appear in the credits) and Dave Gibbons (whose name does) but I think this is one of the most faithful adaptations since Lord of the Rings. I do find the 3D CG style a bit distracting but finally got used to it. I also loved they hewed closely to Gibbon's style. This films makes me optimistic about the future of the DCAU as many of their recent releases have declined in quality of storytelling. I didn't know who Conrad Veidt was until much later after reading the series. Supposedly he was the inspiration for Ozymandius' last name but unless there's a film he did close to the character I think that's about it for inspiration. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/24 Full Review David D Already watching Chapter II. It's stunning, given the latitude a couple of feature length animated films gives, how close the live action version is to this. One isn't better than the other. They are both better and more banal at different times from each other. If you enjoyed the live action, watch it. If you felt the comic could never be screened, watch it. It's not a back way to spend a few hours. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Iraj B One of the best movies to come out this year by far the story that comics gets published every year as for DC to keep the copyright, but rarely achieve anything outside of the comic book medium this is one of the best Adaptations of the watchmen ever this film gives you a pseudo take on absurdism existentialism all in 84 minutes with more to come with in chapter 2, covering the glam and glitter of today with the muck of tomorrow in the past as the core in essence of this film will resonate with people forever relative to only their time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Lucifer M Any Watchmen fan cannot find themselves disappointed with this animated film, since it’s definitely a true carbon copy of the original story; not an adaptation. It actually feels like they used the graphic novel as the script and screenplay, without interpretations from the artists at work here. That by no means is anything negative about it. The one thing fans always said was they wanted to see the story play out without any changes or revisions…well we got it! Guarantee you though that we’ll still get those gate keepers ranting that they wanted some changes done to it, I don’t know why. The story, cinematography, editing and animation are all top notch here. Add the great voice acting to the mix and what we have here is Grade A entertainment. We’ve come to expect nothing less from WB’s DC Animated content, as they never disappoint! At least DC fans like myself can gleefully say that when it comes to animated content, DC is far more superior than Marvel in terms of the medium. Hell yeah!
