What to Know

Critics Consensus

We Have a Ghost has a fun concept and a talented cast; unfortunately, this spookily uneven '80s pastiche also has very little idea of what to do with them.

Audience Says

It suffers from some clunky writing, but We Have a Ghost is a fun lightweight supernatural comedy that might even make you cry.

Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This movie is terrible -- and it's so long! Mar 3, 2023 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times There are times when We Have a Ghost is too corny for its own good, and the reveal about what happened to Ernest is kind of out of left field. Still, the cast is wonderful, the laughs are frequent, and the ending is truly touching. Rated: 3/4 Feb 25, 2023 Full Review Christian Zilko indieWire Movies like this live or die based on our emotional investment in the relationships at their core, and Landon just isn’t able to conjure up a father-son dynamic (or a kid-ghost dynamic) that’s compelling enough to power the story. Rated: C+ Feb 24, 2023 Full Review Daniel Allen Loud and Clear Reviews Christopher Landon’s We Have A Ghost is a fun and mischievous family comedy horror movie, and a ghost story for the social media age. Rated: 4/5 Jul 25, 2024 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Christopher Landon’s aimless and stagnant We Have a Ghost is an attempt by the horror-comedy director to make a family ghost film that is light on chills, general hilarity, and soul-stirring moments. Rated: 2/5 Mar 10, 2024 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers “We Have a Ghost” is entertaining even if it fritters away most of its greatest aspects. Aug 23, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Priscilla L Awful. Bad actors. The dad character was insufferable. The plot is not very well written, hard to follow. So stupid. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review Gabbie S Honestly had high hopes for this movie but the writing just.. wasn’t there. Cliche and a little tacky. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Daulton C There are portions where the plot is lazy and not thought out by the writers. There are portions that are funny and even heartfelt. But overall, there were clearly too many directions the writers wanted to go that caused this movie to be way too long and not very good. The CIA aspect was so unnecessary, lazy, and took the story down a poorly executed “Stranger Things” road. Should you watch it? If you’re looking for a ‘family friendly-ish’ movie during the halloween season and you’ve already watched all the classics, sure. But, you’re not missing anything. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review Courtney D The reviews are very polarized - I'll admit I had no expectations for this, but it was surprisingly sweet. That David Harbour can express so much emotion without dialogue is impressive. And Kevin brought such sweetness to the role. Did not expect to have such heavy feels from a random Netflix watch - if you like a bit of "horror", comedy, but are also a sap like me - give it a shot Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Chuck M This is gonna be one of those every October/Halloween movies for me. The feels, tha laughs, etc. I guess it go downvotes cuz they hated on Ted Cruz, but the man did it to himself. Tig... I wish she was in more of this. Definitely vibes with things like Hocus Pocus for sure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review Desiree H I don't know why this movie is rated so poorly! I enjoyed it, because it was such an original horror comedy with a big heart. David Harbor's performance was exceptional as Ernest the ghost, even though he doesn't speak. I laughed, I was on the edge of my seat, and I teared up at the end. It's not award-worthy, but I was entertained. The young actors who played Kevin and Joy were particularly impressive. I recommend it! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
