Peter Debruge Variety I've seen "Weekends" thrice now, and some of it still confuses me, but I'm convinced it's a work of art. Feb 24, 2019 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Even with shared familial love, the tricky part for the caring and observant young boy in Weekends are the swings weathered between the different parenting approaches and tones. Rated: 4/5 Jun 26, 2022 Full Review Roberto Friedman Bay Area Reporter A simple premise, but one told with thoughtfulness and precision. May 29, 2020 Full Review Laura Hiros Diario La Estrella (Fort Worth, TX) An animated short... [that is] tremendously emotional. Jacob B Only took somebody a couple of years to update Pixar's Wikipedia navbox to include a few adjacent short films (due to them allowing staff members to utilise company resources to tell their own short stories) for me to learn about this underrated Oscar nominee's existence. Good thing it can still be found on Facebook because I do recommend this short to anybody who grew up with divorced parents. The storytelling is compelling despite the lack of dialogue, the short does a good job depicting what certain events must be like from a child's perspective, it deals with some topics that, while implied, I doubt Pixar would release under their name such as the implication that the mother's new boyfriend is a jerk, to put it mildly and the animation is charming. Do I feel bad this short lost the Oscar to the actual Pixar short? Not really, I still think Bao was incredibly poignant. But I do think this is a hopeful, thought-provoking short that's still really good in its own right.
