A.A. Dowd Digital Trends Walk Hard got to a lot of this stuff 15 years ago, and with much more precision. May 2, 2023 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) It’s a collection of sketches where the whole is less than the pieces. Mar 2, 2023 Full Review Scott Tobias The Reveal (Substack) A goofy made-up plot about Al’s relationship with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood) sends the film off on an unfunny tangent from which it never returns. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 19, 2022 Full Review Joseph Tomastik Loud and Clear Reviews The same way Weird Al takes the familiar framework and composition of a song but replaces its meaning with something purposefully silly and outlandish, Weird does the exact same thing to the typical biopic formula. Rated: 4.5/5 Nov 2, 2024 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews Half the fun of Weird is enjoying the way Yankovic and director Steve Appel skewer the traditional musical bio-pic. Rated: 3/4 Jul 1, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The film's honesty is inspiring, touching on such easily verifiable occurrences as his love affair with Madonna, his gun battle with drug lord Pablo Escobar, and the fact that “Eat It” was an original composition which Al wrote before MJ penned “Beat It.” Rated: 3/4 Dec 26, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Ronald H The majority of pop music is inherently stupid, to the point where it begs to be satirized. Weird Al understands this, and he deserves his success. It's only natural that a biopic co-written by him would itself be a parody, and it mostly works. There are innumerable laugh-out-loud moments. But including a fictional love affair with Madonna is a misstep, mainly because there's nothing funny about someone who made a fortune promoting promiscuous sex to pre-teen girls. There's also an unavoidable dichotomy between the two characters: Weird Al has real talent while Madonna is a talentless pop star commodity. On the positive side, Evan Rachel Wood plays her character as the vacuous airhead that she is. Aside from that, the film is exactly what we expect from Weird Al. Three stars for registering pretty high on the laugh meter. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Mark B The worst thing about biopics is not being entirely sure which bits were just made up to make for a more exciting film. Of course, this one's a parody, so it's largely made up. I assumed this would be done for comedy purposes, but it's really just one joke so it ended up feeling a little pointless. Would probably have worked better as an SNL sketch. There was no need to stretch it out for a couple of hours. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Nick R Weird is a way you'd expect form Weird Al himself, and with tons of laughs! It's a great way to parody the traditional and boring biopic films we are used too. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review Audience Member This movie is every bit as weird as Al himself, if you aren't part of the target audience, you just won't get it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Charles D It loses its way a little in the last act but it made me laugh out loud and I don’t think I have ever seen a movie that is entirely a parody, even a parody of this genre of movie. Harmless, grin-inducing fun Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review Mason M This is the worst movie I've seen in 2024 hate me if you want but I'm not wrong for a lot of people this is the worst movie I've seen in 2024 because going in I thought it was going to be an actual biopic getting to know what Weird Al Yankovic's childhood was and what he did after but no he had sex with Madonna he got fired by Dr Demento which was not realistic at all he acted like he made eat it and made it a original song when it wasn't and got assassinated at the end with the most Carrie ending as Weird Al Yankovic grabs Madonna's hand.... do not watch this film unless you want to be tortured for an entire hour Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
